Kagome drew in a sharp breath and her knees began to tremble, while a cold chill was running down her spine. The sight in front of her scared her so badly, that she became frozen on the spot. Though her instincts told her to turn on her heels and run away, she was unable to move a muscle. During the months of her shard hunting mission, she had often been unfortunate enough to get a first rate glance at bad omens. And always something bad had happened soon afterwards. But this was without a doubt the worst omen so far.

She remembered the dark clouds that had quickly approached their little group when they had been climbing the Inagi Mountain pass last month. The clouds had been so dark, it had looked like the skies had been swallowed whole by a gigantic black hole. And just when they had scaled the peak of the most treacherous mountain within a radius of a hundred miles, a severe thunderstorm had lashed down on them. Vicious lightning bolts had struck down, scaring the living daylights out of Shippo and Rin. If hadn’t been for Miroku’s barrier, they probably wouldn’t have survived the night.

She remembered the sinister crows that had been following them, three weeks ago, when they had discovered yet another one of Naraku’s deserted castles. Since they had seemed to be ordinary birds, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru had refrained from killing them. When they had been in the middle of their investigation, suddenly a giant demon crow had appeared out of nowhere. A little token of appreciation for their little group, courtesy of Naraku. It had taken the combined strength of Sango’s Hiraikotsu and Sesshomaru’s Tokijin to vanquish the terrible monster. After the monster’s defeat, the crows had vanished into thin air.

She also remembered the first bad omen she had ever noticed. It had been the sickening, shattering noise that she had heard, after she had shot the arrow at the three eyed crow, which had seized the jewel of the four souls. She hadn’t thought much of the pink shooting stars that had darted off in every direction. She had simply assumed it had been a miracle of nature, when in fact it had been a display of her own clumsiness. Yes, she would never forget that she had been the one who had caused all this mess. Damn shards.

No, when it came to bad omens, Kagome could rightfully consider herself to be an expert. Of course, she would have loved to pass on the title to someone else. Alas, Dame Fortune was not her best friend and would probably never be. Therefore she had to face the worst omen: She had to face a smiling Lord Sesshomaru, though her heart sank into her boots. He approached her without haste until he came to a halt directly in front of her. He bent his head slightly, so that their lips were only inches apart.

“Play with me,” he susurrated.
