“Mama!” a lone child wailed amidst the wreckage of the destroyed village the expanded Inutachi had come upon. Her mother would not be coming anytime soon, as it seemed that she was the sole survivor.
Rin stood alongside a stoic Sesshomaru, and her young face twisted with memories she’d rather forget. “Mama,” she whispered so lowly only the youkai lord beside her heard, clearly remembering fire and destruction. He placed a hand on her head; she buried her face in his pantleg.
Silently, the Inutachi spread out to look for any possibility of survivors. Kagome, though usually the one most active in these activities, was standing off to the side. Even Inuyasha glanced over to the side at her as if to say, ‘Aren’t you going to take care of the little girl?’
“Mama!” the child wailed again, scrubbing her face with dirty hands.
It was Rin who ultimately took charge. “You can share my Mama for awhile.” She matter of faculty approached Kagome and placed the child’s hand in hers.
“Mama.” This time it was Kagome who whispered it, all her longing to return home boiling to the top and spilling over. She knelt down to the girls’ level, hugging them both. “I want my Mama, too,” she said, holding tight.
Sesshomaru heard the undisguised longing in her voice and resolved to return her to her home in the near future. For the time being, however, he approached the trio.
“Miko.”
She looked up. “Hai, Sesshomaru-sama?”
The youkai lord carefully placed Mokomoko around her shoulders, fluffing it so it would warm even her cheeks.
It was a silent reminder that he was their alpha, and they were under his protection.
Kagome snuggled into the soft fur, and thought that perhaps the packs’ situation wasn’t so bad, after all.
