Nursemaid

The heat from his proximity radiated through her clothing, his skin millimetres, if even, from her chest in what could have been an intimate gesture, if she couldn’t still feel the sting of pain in the marks circling her wrist, or the bite of his claws around his grip. The sweep of his hair hovered in a silver arc around them, enclosing them as a swell of youki raised the hairs on the back of her neck, and despite his injury, the pressure of his presence hit her as heavily as a colliding sledgehammer.

The rapid rhythm of her pulse thumping in her ears, her fingers beginning to tingle, Kagome clung to her nerve, and when the tall form of the youkai pulled back, she met his gaze with a brazen confidence she didn’t feel. Breaking away, her glance flicked behind her.

The silence stretched for a few moments, tension cloying in the air like second-hand smoke, before his claws abruptly inched into her skin, and although she was expecting some sort of reaction, it was still painful.

Realisation flickered through his expression, morphing it in subtle movements that Kagome realised with a start - wouldn’t normally be recognisable if not for the volume of emotion. A quiet guilt, despite herself, crept up on her, as pale golden eyes followed her glance back to observe the quiet rim of the cave.

Her words tinged with triumph as his eyes met hers again. “You have no choice.”

There was a scuffle of footsteps against stone, echoing in the background behind her, before the distinct gruff sound of Inuyasha’s voice called. “Kagome?”

His eyes were narrowed into thin slits, barely visible amidst the white palor of his skin - that was painful with the reminder of blood loss. “You will accompany me - for a while.”
