The thunder and lightning left her stunned and momentarily blind to his location. The hair on the back of her neck stood as she suddenly felt the air on her left move. Blinking, she searched for him, only to find him a step away, his hand reaching out.
The back of her head thumped against the wall he pushed her against and she felt his hand wrap gently around her neck. Frightened grey eyes looked into narrow golden ones as her breath increased and her heart pounded against her ribcage.
“Did you really think there wouldn’t be any repercussions to your betrayal?” His dark voice, soft and low, brushed over her face. The warmth and moisture was evidence that he was really there and that her life was going to end.
Her bottom lip quivered as she scanned the room in the hopes that the agents were swiftly coming to her rescue. But at the flash of lightning she found that she was alone, and doubted that they would come anytime soon.
That’s what made him so dangerous. While most hired killers would kill all around the primary target, he merrily slipped in, no matter the security, took out the target, and then slipped out without anyone knowing he was there.
“Now I know what you’re thinking. You think that someone will be here to check on you and find me here, right? I regret that, that will not be happening. You see, we could stand here for hours like this and no one will ever come.” Her eyes zipped back to his and she saw the truth in them.
“You killed them?” Why? He never has before. What was special about her that he would change his M.O.?
“Killed them? No, I assure you they are fine. Just frozen in time so to speak. You see, I have in my possession a certain artifact that puts people and animals into a type of time suspension.
“I don’t use it very often. Most of my targets are not so closely guarded and my skills alone are sufficient. But it comes in handy when one needs a little more time to achieve a desired goal. And I was given very specific instruction on how to… handle you.” He smiled slowly and the little light there gleamed off his fangs. “Now be a good girl, remain silent and do as I say.”
