Maneuver
“He seemed like a nice young man.”
Kagome snorted. “He is not nice, Mama.”
Rinsing a dish in the sink Mrs. Higurashi slanted her daughter a searching look. Kagome was poking at her lunch, listlessly stirring the soup.
“You’re sure getting upset over a simple request.”
“A simple request! There was no request!” Her eyes were like saucers. “He told me he was going to court me!” she protested, waving her chopsticks for emphasis.
“He was very polite about it.”
“Yeah, because I had a choice about anything.”
“He is used to taking charge of a situation. That’s not a bad trait,” Mrs. Higurashi defended coolly.
“He’s overbearing!” Kagome snapped.
Mrs. Higurashi smiled. “He’s also very handsome.”
“He’s prettier than I am.” Kagome agreed, sniggering.
“Kagome, I did not raise you to be rude,” Mrs. Higurashi chided. “People can not choose the way they look.”
Chastised, Kagome lowered her eyes to her now cold noodles, hunching her shoulders.
“Besides just think how beautiful your children would be!” Mrs. Higurashi’s cheer was palpable. She stared dreamily out of the window above the kitchen sink. “They would have Inuyasha’s ears, wouldn’t they?”
“Ma-mama!” Kagome managed to sputter.
“Now hand me your bowl. You’re going to be late for your date.”
“I’m not going!” Kagome stated heatedly.
“I cleaned your favourite dress. It’s hanging in your closet.”
“I am not going!”
Lifting her bowl and utensils off the table, Kagome handed them to her mother with a decided pout.
“You should wear those cute wedges too.”
“I am not going.” Kagome shot over her shoulder as she huffed up the stairs to her room.
“Do you want help with your hair?” Mrs. Higurashi called down the hallway, drying her hands on a dishtowel.
“No, thank you!”
A very favourable beginning Mrs. Higurashi mused.
