We made history yesterday folks. Pure, unadulterated, fresh out the box history.
For the first time in over 6 years I'm proud of my country. I may not necessarily be proud of being an American (still claiming I'm half British) but I agreed with what the US did yesterday and that's a lot for me to say.
I voted, and I feel like my vote mattered. I canvassed for Obama, I was part of the winning team, I helped to make this happen. I was part of something bigger and it feels goooood.
The world watched and hoped with Us, and then celebrated the choice We made. My good friend
razorgirl_au from Australia called me up just after the victory was posted, and we celebrated by watching Mcain's concession speech together, b/c she's just as excited as I am that Obama won. It doesn't matter that she's not in the US, how the US handles itself affects the rest of the world. Two days ago I didn't even dare to hope that the US could fix it's tattered reputation in the world, now I feel that We have a chance. Having a president that has such incredible approval the world over could mean that We might not be a laughingstock anymore, and perhaps I'll be proud to be an American someday in the near future.
Listening to Obama's vitctory speech, I almost cried. I've never felt that way about any political speech, even when I did agree with what was said. His speech said to me that We have a fighting change to change this country for the better. I believe in Obama and I've never believed in a politician. I wish I could accurately describe how I felt watching his speech but I don't have the words. My attention never wavered, I heard every word, every inflection in his voice, every call to action, not just listened, Heard. I felt it deep in my core that these were more than just words, more than just a speech, that they were a message that spoke to each and every one of us. Hearing those words has inspired me more than I can ever remember in my Adult life.
Not only did we elect an African-American president, but Virginia, one of the most solidly Republican states out there, went blue. That's almost more impressive than a minoity president : )
I believe. I hope.
Yes we can.
