Games

I've been trying a bunch of smallish/indie games recently, partly looking for inspiration. Here's some stuff I enjoyed and/or thought was neat. A lot of them are short but still interesting. (Almost all of these are in Java or Flash)

If you like graphical adventure games (ie: several old titles from Sierra and Lucasarts) and have an hour to kill, you should try Host Master and the Conquest of Humor. It's a meta-ish game about Tim Schafer trying to come up with jokes before going on stage at the GDC Awards ceremony. There are 22 jokes in all, but if you go out on stage with too few, you can continue where you left off.

It's a few months old now, but Dangeresque Roomisode 1: Behind the Dangerdesque is a similar sort of deal -- a short graphical adventure all in one room. Peasant's Quest is Videlectrix's (older) larger and longer stab at the genre.

Evacuation - I really like this game. A lot of the other stuff I mention here is "figure it out and you're done", but this is a randomized level puzzle game. Some of them are easy, like the early stages, but in others you'll be going "argh I missed that door/pathway" or "argh I got the timing wrong" when trying to close the door after venting an alien, but before venting a human. I found this when I saw a mention of one of his other games, QWOP (kind of silly) in a comment on a Kotaku article about Rock N' Roll Climber. (ugh)

Starwave was a nice idea, but very short.

Storyteller is more like a toy than a game, but it's also a neat idea. (note: try making guys overlap in the second frame) I wish I were the moon is kind of similar. (by the same guy)

Don't Shit Your Pants - A "survival horror" game, where you have to figure out the different endings.

Achievement Unlocked - A simple but amusing game that makes fun of the whole "achievements" phenomenon.

Minotaur China Shop - Needs the Unity Player. (I already had it installed at work for something else) This was a lot of fun. It seems to work well if you play "good" at first, then "bad" on the last day, for the insurance.

Tetris HD - Amusing take on the game.

Not games, but related articles...

If Video Game Characters Could Switch Games - Some great crossover pics.
The fugliest games ever made - #1 is infamous. I liked their treatment of #2.
Old pic, but I just saw it: My Little Pwny
