Room 503, Monday Morning

Oct 13, 2008 08:40

It had not been a good weekend.

Yurika had spent most of it hiding in her room, ignoring the world and radio around her as she tried to figure out what she was going to do.

Now, however, she was staring at her test from Saturday, shaking it with a puzzled look on her face.  What had definately been a 'positive' sign was now, inexplicably, a 'zero ( Read more... )

Romeo looked much the worse for wear as he walked across the hall and tapped on the door, clutching a note in one hand. A slight dampness on the note and some redness around his eyes might suggest he had been crying.

This was just cruel.

There was a muffled sound that might have vaguely been 'go away.'

If Romeo wanted to try the knob, it was unlocked, but no Yurika came to answer the door.

She was inside, at least.

Romeo tried the knob and came to sit on her bed.

"Hey."

He wasn't going to say more just now, just sit and be miserable with her.

"Hey," she answered, shifting so she could peek out at him from under her blanket.

She should tell him. She was half terrified he might change his mind, go find his Juliet instead, but this wasn't exactly something she could hide.

Yurika shifted a bit closer, one hand coming out from her covers to curl her fingers around his. "It changed."

Romeo took her hand and squeezed, not knowing what her it was. "A lot of things did," he said cautiously. "What was yours?"

"The test, it -" she licked her lips nervously and held his hand a bit tighter. "It's different today. The result changed. You saw it, I saw it, but today it's completely different."

"I even took another one, to check." Yurika shut her eyes, wanting to curl up into a little ball and disappear. "No baby."

"No baby," Romeo echoed, disbelieving. An odd mixture of relief and disappointment coursed through him. "And -- no Juliet. Hinata left a letter."

He handed her the note.

"What? No!" She sat up, grasping the note tightly as she read. "Oh no."

"I don't understand. What's going on?"

"I know," he said, sounding utterly spent. "At a guess, Fandom is being cruel again, showing us possibilities just to snatch them away."

"... poor Hinata."

"Poor Hinata," she echoed, handing him back the note. "I'm never going to be able to look her in the eyes again. I feel terrible."

Yurika shook her head. "I'm not sure which one is crueler," she said quietly. "After prom, when the island gave you Seraphina for a weekend, or this."

"I'll send her flowers," he said. "Something, anyhow. I broke her heart and it wasn't even really hers."

"This was the crueler," he informed her, after a moment's thought. "There is a way to look at Seraphina as a kindness, letting me know there's a world where things worked for us even if I don't get to live there. This was just ..." He shook his head, unable to go on. "And this is the second time the island's shown us a child and taken it away. Are you all right?"

"You didn't break it alone, koibito, I helped a little bit there too," Yurika replied, shifting closer so she could lay her head on his shoulder.

"I don't know, I don't. I mean, I'm not ready to be a parent. At all. I didn't want that, not yet, and I'm relieved that I don't have to worry about it. But at the same time, I feel a little sad. Does that make any sense?"

Romeo cuddled into the head on his shoulder, wondering why it made him feel almost guilty. "I was the one who took the sun from her sky," he said. "Don't feel guilty for being with me. And I wonder, now, if I mourned enough." The months of solitude in Verona had seemed long to him, but he could see why they would look short from Juliet's side.

"The baby was a possibility," he said, shifting to look at her more fully. "A life. What wouldn't make sense would be letting go of it easily."

"Is there a week where you don't miss her, at least a little bit?" Yurika asked curiously. "I might have to hit you on her behalf if that's the case, but somehow I don't think it is." It wasn't something Yurika especially liked thinking about, but honestly, she'd be more worried if he didn't still think about Juliet.

She didn't doubt his feelings for her (or Juliet), not after this weekend, but it was nice to know in a strange way that he stayed constant in his affections.

"It was. A possibility, I mean." Yurika smiled a little bit and shrugged. "Maybe one I wouldn't mind later, but not today."

"I think I miss what we could have had more than anything else," Romeo said. "Of course I think about her, you don't fall in such love and not think about it, but ... I never got to know her as I do you." There was more he could have said, about missing Juliet's strength and her smile, but he held that back out of respect for Yurika.

He offered a faint, brief smile. "It's like the child. A lost possibility."

It was probably a good thing he held that part back. Yurika was feeling insecure enough today without that added information.

"I hate this island sometimes," she sighed, looking over at him. "Think we can get away with pretending this weekend never existed?"
