The dramatic Cambodia Trip Part 1

Nov 08, 2009 14:43

The best part about travelling free and easy is that you never know what to expect.

Expecting to see a gorgeous scenery only to find the dark clouds obscuring everything in sight?
Original plan was to go on Route A but Route B turned out to be the best last minute decision you ever made?

The Siem Reap trip this year, was one of the dramatic trips i've been on, giving much colour to the otherwise grim landscape.

Trip to Siem Reap was indicated as about 4 and a half hrs by Silkair, so we were pleasantly surprised that it only took us about 3 and a half hours. And JF was already worrying that we would need to wait for an hour for the hotel pick up. We walked down the plane (no aerobridge of couse) and arrived at the arrivals.

See something wrong?
Yea, that's what we thought too. It seems more like Viet words rather than the Khymer?

Ok, maybe because we are near Viet so they use both languages....
err..then we were told by the immigration that we were in Vietnam. Right.
Happy for nothing. We thought we were landing one hr earlier, only to find ourselves in the wrong country.

After double checking our air tix, seeing another 2 stranded ang mors, and speaking to the immigration peeps, we finally realised that ours was a transit flight, and we should not have gotten off the plane. Yea, tell me about it. So none of us heard the supposedly-made announcement, and neither was the transit indicated on the plane tix nor booking, and neither did the person at the check-in counter inform us about it..so how were we supposed to know?!

The air steward greeted us with "Welcome back" when we reboarded the plane..so embarrassing.

We were greeted by the Spirit of Angor's (our hotel) staff when we arrived:

Hilarious!

Our huge and comfortable room:

All at 6USD per person per night!
No typos there. SIX USD. inclusive of breakfast plus free rides to and fro the city!

Nothing much we could do on the first day, since we arrived in the evening.
So we took a walk around the city (which was very small), and had dinner.
Food in Siem Reap, as we came to realise, was not fantastic. There was no distinctive feature, and it seemed more like a mish mash of Thai and Chinese. The fruit shakes, however, were awesome:

Loved the mango milk shakes to bits!
Had that almost every meal after that. =D

Didn't spend a lot of time roaming the city as we had to turn in early in order to prepare for our big Ang Kor adventure the next day. One thing we realise though..the tuk tuk drivers are really persistent, as in persistent. We had one tailing us up and down the streets so that we would give in and take his tuk tuk instead of waiting for our hotel pick up.

Ha! Even if we wanted to take a tuk-tuk, we would take any others but yours!
