Free Easter Egg Pattern

I made eight of these soft eggs for my daughter for Easter this year. It's a great way to use up tiny scraps of fabric that might otherwise be thrown away. Children can hide them around the house and take turns looking for them long after Easter is over and you won't have to worry about your plastic eggs that you save to reuse every year getting lost or broken. Even if you don't have kids, these are a nice table decoration for the Easter holidays or you can make them for Christmas tree ornaments.

If you have more fabric colors than I did, it will have a much more pleasing effect. I just use old quilting scraps and pieces of whatever I can find of old clothing, so I didn't have a lot of nice pastels and Easter colors to choose from this year. If you want to make plain white or brown eggs, just use solid colored fabric. Then you can place the eggs into a used egg carton (cut it in half and you only have to make six) and the kids can use it in their play kitchen.

Copy and paste this pattern image into Word or a similar file. YOU MAY NEED TO RESIZE THE IMAGE. You can usually do this in Word by right-clicking on the pasted image and selecting "size." You can then change the height and width. The width should be exactly 3 inches long and the height should be exactly .75 inches. Print onto the back of a piece of scrap paper.

1. Fold the paper in half along the dotted line on the pattern and cut around the pattern so you have two identical halves. Open the pattern.

2. Place the pattern onto the back of a piece of fabric and trace carefully around it flush to the edge of the paper. I used a fine-tipped marker. Trace and cut four pieces for each egg. Cut right along the traced line. Do not add extra around the edge.

3. Place two pieces faced together and sew along one edge tip to tip. Sew only about 2 mm in from the edge. Fold front panel down and add another panel facing the back panel. Sew together around the edges. Repeat until you have all four pieces sewn together.

4. When sewing the opening closed on the last piece, sew it only 3/4 shut and tie off thread. Turn egg inside out and stuff with batting of your choice. (I use batting saved from old pillows.) Stuff egg full to bursting, then carefully close hole on outside of egg using a whip stitch. Mash egg around in your hands to reshape it if necessary.
