Needle Felting on a Budget

Being deep into the natural movement as I am, I have always wanted needle felted wool toys for my daughter to play with. Unfortunately, they are VERY expensive. Even the supplies alone are not cheap. Just a few basic supplies and a handful of wool roving colors can cost sixty to one hundred dollars just to get you started. For years, I wished that I could afford them, but could not.

Then this month, I came across an Etsy shop that sells wool roving and felting supplies very affordably. I bought several colors in one-ounce sizes and two needles. Here is what I received in my package:

The colors are very lovely and the wool is wonderful. I was able to purchase all of this for under $30 including shipping. There is enough wool here for years worth of toys. I do plan to buy more green wool to make some playscapes. Most needlefelters us a foam pad beneath their work, but I found that an old pillow works perfectly fine. You may still need the foam pad or a brush felting mat for flat felting projects.

If you are looking for needle felting supplies, I highly suggest buying from where I received my supplies. These are the best prices I have been able to find anywhere! At $2.50 an ounce or less, I am going to be a regular customer!

For my first-ever project, a chicken for my toddler! What an adorable little henny. She sits on a soft wool nest and has a little removable felted wool egg. Sorry there is no scale reference. The nest is almost the size of the palm of my hand. She is about 3x3". My little one has scarcely been able to put it down all day. She loves it!

The underside of the hen is concave so that she can sit over the egg without falling off. It took two hours start to finish to create, but I suspect it will go quicker once I learn how to do it more efficiently. Needle felting is quick and very very easy. If you would like to learn, check out needle felting videos on Youtube for instructions. That is how I learned. It really is as simple and easy as it looks.

Total cost: about $1 worth of wool.

Happy needlefelting!
