LOCAL MAN BREAKS NECK, WINS "AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS"
Gaithersburg, MD.
The Thompson family reunion takes place once every five years. It is normally spent barbecuing hot dogs, hamburgers, and "dangerously underdone chicken." This year, however, John Thompson was intent on making things extra special. Just as things were kicking off, he noticed a frisbee on his roof. Immediately, he went to go get it for Stevie (age 9) and Rob (age 12).
He used his ladder to climb onto the roof and immediately threw the frisbee back down to the children. He did not make a scene, just "kindly gave the children back their toy."
On John's way back to the ladder, Stevie, who's "always been a little slow," threw the disc back to his uncle on the roof. The frisbee made direct contact with Thompson's head, temporarily throwing off his equilibrium. He stumbled two steps, and fell down "head first, like he was doing a swan dive," breaking his neck on contact with the cold, hard ground.
Luckily, Martha Thompson, his sister, had the camera running, catching the ordeal on video. She described it as "back breakingly hilarious, sorry about the pun! My first thought was to keep the camera running. Bob always used to say to keep it running... before he got replaced by that witless puppet..."
The tape was sent in to the popular "America's Funniest Home Videos" and one the first prize of $10,000, the audience laughed for minutes on end, seemingly ignorant of the horrific aftermath.
John Thompson commented from his talking computer that "maybe it can help to pay [his] staggering medical bills."
