Musing on Animation

Hmm? What? Homework? No, I'm busy making an LJ post.

So I'm almost done with my first quarter of Animation School. I wasn't sure at the time, back in November if this was the right thing to do. I mean, more school, more loans, I just finished all of that. But it was totally the right thing to do. Animation school is awesome. All my classes (except one) are awesome and I can see them all leading me towards future careers that I would enjoy.Much as I loved UPS none of the classes I took there ever gave me a direction. Ooh painting! It's fun, it's pretty, it's not particularly useful. Flash is the greatest thing ever (mostly) and I can make things bounce and jump and walk and fight dinosaurs with it, but I can also put it on a resume. Woot.

The thing that's strangest to me though is the thought that I am apparently heading towards a job in the entertainment industry. Weird. I think cartoons are awesome, and the works of Walt Disney and Fleischer and Warner Brothers Studios are all artwork to me. But outside my idealistic fantasy they are also the output of what has become a giant machine.

Right now my current career goal is to work for The Discovery Channel putting together all that awesome CGI they use to distort history to make it more interesting. Especially the shows with dinosaurs. National Geographic would work just as well. I don't know how I will get from there to being offered a job by John Lasseter but it will totally happen.

I want to make a cartoon about a flock of little birds. First I need to do my homework though. Then work on my broad jump layout. Then little fluttery birds.

animation school!
