housetraining a 9 month old lab mix

Okay, I'm having some serious trouble housetraining my 9 month old lab mix. He is not reliable in asking to go out, or his signals aren't clear enough. Other times he won't ask at all, and will just go to the bathroom on the floor in front of us. He also tends to run down the hall out of sight and use the bathroom in my bedroom or the hallway.

I've tried to crate train him before, but I guess I didn't do it long enough or something...because he's still using the entire house like his personal bathroom.

I suppose I could try clicker training, he responded really well to that in the training classes we went to.

Can anyone offer any advice at all? I'm at my wits end! Any suggestions you have would be very helpful.
