Hi everyone,
I have a friend who just adopted a 12-week-old Cairn Terrier from a shelter. She is basically a first-time puppy owner, but knows some stuff from a childhood dog. She is enrolled in puppy class at Petco in Boston, which is great, and I suggested to her that the dog training at MSPCA-Angell (in Jamaica Plain, Boston, near her house) might have more expert trainers, if she does another class later.
On to my point:
I'm looking for recommendations for a book (or two or three, but preferably one) that will help my friend raise a well-behaved, well-socialized dog. It would be good if it started on the theoretical level, on how and why positive reinforcement and negative punishment works, and then also covers practical matters of training. Oriented around clicker training would be great, but not totally necessary. Anyone know of a book that would be great for my friend (especially one that might be available through a public library system)?
Thanks so much,
Alex
