As you may or may not recall, I just recently got a standard poodle puppy. He was 12 weeks old on Friday and housebreaking has been going fairly well. He pees on his puppy pads during the day while I'm gone and never pees anywhere else. He does not poop in the house. He'll mostly go to the door when he needs to pee and if his leash is in reach, sometimes he'll grab it on his way to the door. I feel like he's got the idea...
Here's my problem though - We have another dog and when both of them are playing, Charley forgets to ask to go out. He'll have an accident and we'll take him outside where he may or may not pee more. Then, five minutes later, he'll pee again. Seriously, when Ruby is in the house with him, Charley pees like a faucet. Constantly.
I know that puppies need to pee when they get excited and I have been good and have read up on housebreaking since it's been 8 years since I've had to housebreak a puppy. I take him out after he eats and drinks and before playing since Ian Dunbar recommends only playing with an "empty" puppy. I can't find any information specifically about the dynamics of housebreaking a puppy when you have another dog that seems to cause the puppy to pee incessantly.
Does anyone have any recommendations about what I can try? Am I just going to have to wait until he gets a little older and his puppy-bladder can hold it when he plays? I just feel like there may be a trick to this somewhere.
Anyway, thanks for reading if you made it through all of that and any advice is appreciated. I just don't remember going through this with our last puppy. We had two dogs when we brought her home and I just don't remember it being an issue.
