Woke up this morning and it's a fasting blood glucose draw day so first thing I did was start getting ready for that. I had some issues getting blood and wasted a couple strips but eventually got some off of my forearm. Only problem is it shot out an error message instead of a number. I go poking through my manual and the error means the strip was no good or my blood sugar is very low. I figure it can't be the latter so take another sample from my finger, get the same result.
At this point I'm a little stressed as I've never had a low reading before. I call work because I'm supposed to be there in 10 minutes and I'm still standing around in my underwear trying to figure out what to do so I don't pass out. My pal, Sam, answers and tells me to worry about myself this morning and he'll figure out a replacement for me. After I'm off the phone I remember I grabbed some glucose tablets at Wal-Mart in case I ever had a low reading. I go ahead and eat one of those and then find some pizza with lots of yummy carbs to pop my numbers back up.
I tested again about fifteen minutes later and I am at 133 and much more reasonable (a little high, in fact). I'm already tired and slightly stressed and realizing this disease is really gonna be a pain in my ass sometimes. But I can also handle it, I think. I've made it through my first hypoglycemia and I'm sure it won't be my last. I have lost about 3 lbs since my diagnosis and my next weigh-in is Thursday so might be well on my way to more. I'm eating better and generally living better and I can do this but man, waking up at the verge of fainting, not so awesome.
I'm not sure but I may call my Doctor later to find out what I need to do different to avoid this happening again, or I may wait to see how my next fasting blood draw pans out. I know I didn't eat enough yesterday and that may be the only problem. But if this continues I will probably see about knocking my meds down a bit to avoid this and using my diet more for keeping my sugars down.
