I love soccer, and refereeing has made me a lot of money over the years, as well as keep me in good shape. After Officiating for 23 years... I had the worst momnet ever.
We were at SUNY Brockport for a game. A usual crew of officials is 3. I was to be the center official who has the whistle and runs everywhere.. No problem, I have only done it 40 times over the past 10 weeks. To make a long story short, one of the officials did not show... don't know why , they just didn't. So we did a 2 man system. I don't like it, but it works.
10 minuets into the second half, I was running in front of the home teams bench, and my cleats caught in the soft mud as I was changing directions.. I rolled the ankle, heard a good Popping sound and landed right in the mud in front of the home team. I have been busted up before, but this hurt enough everyone just stopped. The time was stopped, and I was sitting in the mud not getting up as the trainer came out for me. God, just dig a hole and roll me in. Usually a 3 man game, My spot could have been covered, BUT we were already missing 1. So I hoped around for 35 mins of the second half.A player asked if I needed an ice bag. Kind question, but did not help my mood. After the game many players made a point to thank me for gettign through the game, because otherwise the game would have been cancelled, and they would have to have replayed it Thursday.
I have a lovely grapfruit that connects the leg to the foot. I turned back the games I was to have on Friday and saturday.I am hopeing to be able to run on wednesday next week.
At least I still have good meds from knee surgery a few years ago, and the air cast was easy to find so I can do my real job..
