I found Melbourne to be a dirty, dark, damp, cluttered, noisy, barren wasteland of a city. Obviously the fervour with which the Melbourne-centric media promote the city is an attempt to blind the rest of the world to what they know to be the truth. "Me think thou doth protesteth too much!"

My sentiments exactly. I've never, ever been a fan of the place. Sydney's fine for a holiday, Vancouver's home, and Brisbane could be home quite easily. But Melbourne is an "important" city simply due to the self-importance of some of its passionate inhabitants.

So what you gents are saying is that Melbourne is to Australia what Toronto is to Canada?

Toronto thinks that Toronto is the center of the universe. The rest of the universe thinks Toronto is a garbage dump.
