Round 1

May 06, 2006 19:25

First round of matches completed, and while we were beaten 4 - 2, we were all surprised and heartened by the showing that we all put in.

Just before half time we were going along fairly nicely, and we got 2 - 1 ahead when one of my mates (the unco-ordinated despite he was a gymnist one), after the second goal was scored, exclaimed to all who would listen "We should have been in A-Grade years ago!"

Even the opposition players squirmed at that clanger!

Also, as promised, I've included a picture of me in my new mask which I wear during short corners. It would have been an action shot, but after the game I discovered matron_jojo took about 6 pictures with me just out of shot.

Of course, after the game I had to endure one of the less fun aspects of amateur sport: umpiring. While I'm one of the better umpires in the club, I havn't got any accreditation yet and it's been a while so I'm not really into the swing of it so far.

So there I was, halfway through the second half at the scoring end of the team that was 4 - 0 ahead, with the losing team getting more feral (and dangerous for that matter) every minute, and with thier (drunk) B-Grade team behind me on the sidelines hurling abuse. And then the fullback (who, by the way is a qualified ump himself) yells "You're as s**t a player as you are an umpire..."

I think pulling our all my cards (and making sure to examine them as if making up my mind), giving him the lowest denomination and telling him to shutup was a fairly restrained reaction, don't you?
