“Well Spock, it’s the first day of our last year here at Enterprise. Tell me: have you asked her out yet?” Sam asked Spock as they stood at their lockers before school started, as they’d done every morning for the last three years of high school. Sam was rummaging around the top section of her locker, looking for something in the mess she’d created. Spock was astonished at her ability to wreak havoc in such a small area. It wasn’t even an hour into the new school year yet.
Spock looked at Sam out of the corner of his eye, trying to come up with a suitable answer. The ‘her’ Sam was speaking of was Nyota Uhura, an alto in their concert choir, and the head cheerleader. Spock had had a crush on her since the day he’d first heard her sing in their mixed choir, freshman year of high school.
“I’m going to assume from your silence that you’re trying to come up with a reason that you didn’t ask her. There isn’t one, at least not a good one.” Sam’s voice came from inside the locker. Spock wasn’t sure what she could be looking for at this early hour, wasn’t sure he wanted to know. She jumped down from where she’d been standing in the bottom of her locker trying to see into the top section better, and turned to look at him.
“You just gotta go for it Spock. Use all that logic rolling around in that head of yours and convince her that you and her together is…meant to be.” Sam trailed off at the end of the sentence, sighing quietly. Spock followed her gaze as it strayed from his face, and was not surprised to see the captain of the varsity basketball team, James Kirk walking by with a few other members of the team.
“You were saying?” Spock asked her, the barest hint of mockery coming through his usually almost inflectionless voice. He turned to lean his back against his own locker, which he’d already organized to suit him perfectly for the rest of the year, and would not need to return to for the rest of the day.
“Hey, Jim Kirk is a completely different situation from what you have with Uhura. You two have actually spoken, she knows your name. She’s shown interest in you.” Sam flopped back against the locker next to her own, hers still being open. She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at the retreating back of her own long-time crush. “Jim Kirk is just a guy I’ve had a pathetic crush on since…”
“Since the first time you saw him play basketball, in the first JV game of our freshman year.” Spock finished for her, also watching Jim Kirk walk away, more to make sure he didn’t overhear their conversation than any affection he had for the male.
“Yes Spock, I remember. I just didn’t see the need to say it out loud and reaffirm my ‘pathetic’ status.” Sam rolled her eyes and sighed again. She jerked as the first bell rang, scrambling up and almost diving into her still open locker. “Damnit, I don’t have any of my stuff ready.” It only being the first day of school, she didn’t need much of anything, but that didn’t stop her from panicking.
“I shall see you in choir, Samantha. I have to go.” Spock pushed himself up into a standing position, grabbed his bag from the floor and turned to leave their small alcove off the main hallway. They’d had these lockers since they were assigned them freshman year.
“Yea, totally. You’re all the way across school, I’m just down the hall. I have to find Jaxon still anyways, I’m not sure how I’m getting home today.” Sam waved her hand absentmindedly to signify that she understood. She had squatted down to flip through her notebooks, deciding which one she wanted to use for the lazy note taking she had perfected for first days.
“Let me know if you’ll need a ride. You know I do not mind in the least.” He told her, walking around her and starting down the hall.
“You betcha, Spock.” She shoved the notebook she’d chosen in her bag, slammed both her locker door, and the upper section’s door shut and turned to follow in the direction he’d gone. Jaxon was just waving to Spock as Spock walked past him to the stairs and Jaxon opened up his locker. He had the same homeroom as Sam, because they were twins, or because the school was just too lazy to split them up…they’d never known.
She checked the time on her phone before she turned it off and leaned against the locker next to her brother’s. “Hey little brother.” She greeted him, peeking in his locker to see how he’d set it up this year.
“Hello, Samantha.” He answered, smirking at her.
“Why do you insist on calling me that? Mom’s the only one who ever called me that.” She grumbled as he shut his locker door and started walking towards their homeroom. Sam followed him, bumping his shoulder in a belated ‘hello’.
“Because you insist on calling me ‘little brother’.” Jaxon answered, rolling his eyes as they stepped into their homeroom.
“Well that’s because you’re younger than me; it’s an affectionate nick-name, Jax.” Sam said jokingly as she sat down in the back of the classroom.
“No Sam, ‘Jax’ is an affectionate nick-name. ‘Sammy’ is an affectionate nick-name. ‘Little brother’ is just annoying,” Jaxon corrected her as he sat down next to her. “And besides, you can barely be considered older than me, you were born first by what, two minutes?”
“Heh, still counts. Little brother.” Sam dodged the elbow that Jaxon shot out and dropped the notebook she’d chosen on the desk, laughing all the while.
