“What would you do if I kissed you right now?” he asked, looking at her intently. She looked up from her notebook, the pencil stilling on the paper. She tilted her head as if in thought, though she knew the answer without having to think.

“I’d kiss you back.” She answered.

He leaned forward, hesitating at first, and she was sure he wasn’t going to do anything when he surged forward as if pushed, and their lips connected.

It was sloppy at first, but got better as the seconds rolled by. Lips and teeth and tongue remember what hearts and minds have tried so hard to forget.

He pulled back first. He looked at her as if he’d just remembered what heaven felt like and then his expression changed, as if he could certainly imagine what hell would feel like after.

He was engaged. He had a fiancé.

And it wasn’t her.

She sighed. The hurt was back. The slow dull ache that would build over time until she could hardly stand it.

She looked away from him, back down to the beginnings of what would’ve been a great story. The words and rhythm she’d had in her head had slipped away, and the feeling of contentment and peace she got when she wrote was gone.

All she could see now was him and her. And all she felt was alone.

“I’m sorry.” He said. She sighed again, smiling bitterly. He’d said he was sorry so many times before.

“No, you’re not.” She said back, looking up at him again. When he said sorry, he rarely ever meant it.

no pairing, love, original fiction
