Sunday morning Jake and I fancied a run so we drove out to the Concord unit of the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Great Meadows consists of two units, the other is in Sudbury. We go to both quite regularly, though the Concord one is nearer.

The refuge is hidden away quite well. There's a small sign pointing to the top of Monsen Road off of Route 62 in Concord and at the end of that road there's an alley leading to a single lane driveway through the woods to a small car park with an observation tower and a path out across the lakes.

When we got to the car park we made a small mistake. Neither of us took our keys out of the car before we locked it. Or wallets or phones of course because we were going to be running.

After 5 minutes of me ranting about how stupid we were Michelle got tired of my inability to focus and informed a couple of gentlemen just back from a walk of our predicament. They jumped to our rescue and let me use their phone. They were also AAA members so had their number.

The AAA were great, though concerned a little that whoever was sent out wouldn't be able to find the road we were on (in this GPS, Google Maps world it seems you should never be lost in urban areas). The gents offered to drive us up to the Monson Road/62 junction, but we decided to walk, it being a nice day and us having some time to spare. They were great guys and I thank them profusely.

The houses lining route 62 at the junction of Monson Road are big and beautiful. This is Concord after all. We felt a little conspicuous standing there watching the cars but we made the best of it. The big house on the corner has a large lawn and there was a lady watering it. After 15 minutes of us standing there she came over and asked if we were ok. After we'd explained ourselves she offered us water, sodas and seats on the chairs on her porch. We had a better view of the road from the corner but she wouldn't take no for an answer on everything and brought us out two chilled bottles of water. She was very incredibly nice.

The AAA finally turned up but only had one seat spare in his truck. Jake decided I should go with the man and she'd walk back. When we got back to the car Jake turned up only a few seconds after we did - the lady in the house had seen her starting to walk and decided to give her a lift back. As the AAA fellow was breaking into the car the Concord Police turned up too - the lady in the house had worried that the AAA weren't going to show so had called the police.

The car was broken into in about 10 seconds (and now I know how to do it Hyundai Accent owners across the world should fear me). The kindness of strangers, unexpected I have to say, made our morning.

We decided not to run too much as all that standing around had left us quite knackered.
