Updated the
news post with the following info:
a) Additional recalls, now Canadian Menu Foods plants already implicated (then again, most of us who've been following this have been treating *all* Menu Foods product as suspect)--this includes confirmation of a report of Nutro pet food which was not from the two US plants previously linked to the contaminated pet food being responsible for the death of at least one cat.
Also, as previously noted, all wheat and wheat gluten in pet food should be seen as suspect, largely because we are now finding contaminated gluten outside of beef "cutlets" food (specifically, wet tuna cat food).
b) Senate investigations are beginning into the recall and pet food safety.
c) Updates on death tolls, casualty tolls, etc.
d) Very disturbing info is coming out that indicates Xuzhou Anying may have in fact deliberately adulterated the wheat gluten with melamine (in an effort to boost protein content); in fact, reportedly contamination is obvious even to the naked eye, and granules of substances *besides* melamine have been found.
e) In relation to that last bit, Cornell University has discovered an additional contaminant (not yet revealed) in both biopsied tissue (from pets who succumbed to poisoning) and in contaminated feed. (It is not yet known if this is confirmation of aminopterin--initially reported by two labs, but which has not been confirmed by others--or whether this is a possible third contaminant.)
