Germany supplied many of its aircraft to fly to Africa and transport the troops back to Spain to fight against the Republic. (Many of the officers had been alienated during the reforms) Germany then proceeded to bomb many of the Republican industrial cities such as Guernica and Badajoz.
Germany obviously didn’t join the Spanish Civil war out of sheer kindness, Germany joined so that it could practice its blitzkrieg tactics in preparation for WW2 and it initially hoped to gain the alliance of Spain should such a war ever arise in the future. Germany was to be bitterly disappointed when this alliance was rejected.
I am of the opinion that it was Nationalist strength that led to Franco’s victory, rather than Republican weakness as the Republicans stood a greater chance of winning at the beginning, and due to lack of trust and misunderstandings, and lack of organization, they lost what advantages they had to the Nationalists. However, the deaths of Emilio Mola and General Sanjuro leading personalities of the Republicans may have had an affect on some of the decisions made at the beginning of the war. May Republicans accused Franco of their deaths, (aircraft accidents) however no evidence has been found to prove this.
As the Republic argued over the best tactics to use for the war, the Nationalists worked to increase their numbers. Conscription was introduced and as stated previously, the Army of Africa was flown back to Spain as quickly as possible.
