House-training problem

OK, I will attempt to make a long story short. My family and I found this cocker spaniel almost a month ago. After three weeks of searching and signs and newspaper ads, etc, no one has claimed her so we've decided to keep her. Now I have had dogs before (mostly of the much larger variety) and never had many problems training them. But our new ( Read more... )

:( that's aggravating...

have you tried those pee pads? maybe those would at least get her to poop/pee in an approved inside location?

She is beautiful!

I wish I had some advice for you...I have a year and a half year old cocker spaniel that isn't 100% house trained. The poor dog is driving my mother crazy, because no matter what we do, we can't get him to stop peeing in the house.

We have an older Corgi (he's almost 3) and we never had so many problems with him.

She is adorable.

Try using pee pads. When she is done with her business, pull it towards the door by moving it a few feet the first time. Eventually the pee pad should be by the door and then outside. Hopefully, this should help. It helped train my Irish setter when she was a pup.

Also, apart from the praise, try giving her a treat or two when she does her business outside and give her some extra love. If she does it inside the house, apart from shooing her away - try a stern no or maybe try saying 'bad girl' and put her away in the bathroom for a while. It just might help.

Try seeking proffesional help from a behaviorist, breeder or trainer in your area. They might be able to help you solve your problem and give you sound advice!

I agree with the above post. Alot of people say that training with food is not the best, but under these circumstances its better then having to give her up. I have dealt with some "untrainable" dogs. I would just like to say that ALL dogs can be trained to some extent. I know how frustrated you must be because everything that you have tried has failed. Its very hard and your whole family has to be active and patient in the training attempts. Yes I say "attempts" because it might take a few different methods before it finally clicks to her that she needs to pee outside. And yes you will feel like a fool for not thinking of it sooner. :) (Been there, Done that) You havent had her that long so maybe there is a dominance issue. She needs to know that you are Alpha in her new home and that you want her to do her business outside ( ... )
