HISTORY
The son of a witch and wizard of some fame and power, Jules spent the first few years of his life like any other pampered pureblood: spoiled and free of worry. As he grew older, though, he began to notice fewer Christmas presents and more of his family's acquaintances whispering behind their backs. He tried to ignore such things as he continued to befriend similarly high-class children -- most notably Arion Rosemariné, a bratty child of a family friend who seemed to enjoy his company despite his favorite game being the most violent form of horsey possible.
One day, though, Jules realized just what had been happening to his family when they learned that his father had been killed in an incident that he doesn't know much about to this day, only that it involved knowing the wrong people who used the most dangerous kind of magic. While he was never close to his alway busy father, he was the family's only source of income and Jules was sure that now they would be doomed. But somehow, his mother was able to quickly gain them the financial support of the very same Rosemariné family that had produced Arion.
He saw Arion Rosemariné more than ever after that, and he was never quite sure if the boy was his best friend or worst enemy, only that he was meant to play nice with him. Eventually, though, Jules discovered just why the Rosemariné family cared so much about the de Ferriers when he stumbled upon his mother embracing Rosemariné's father. Startled, he assumed the worst -- that his mother was prostituting herself to him for the sake of Jules and his sisters -- and quickly became determined to help them break free of the Rosemariné family, no matter what it took. (Actually, Mrs. de Ferrier was the former lover of Mr. Rosemariné and would have married him if not for her parents' refusal to allow it, and she was happy to be with him once again.)
But gaining the high income that his family deserved was certainly not something a young boy could do, and so, like any French wizard worth his salt, Jules attended Beauxbatons. There, he realized that he found his classes incredibly easy, and quickly gained a reputation as a genius; students gossiped both about how successful he would become and how annoying it was to have someone so effortlessly intelligent around.
He wasn't content to just sit back and be a good little boy, though, especially when he hit teenhood. Since his intelligence and connections gained him respect as well as dislike at Beauxbatons, he was able to recruit several other boys to form a sort of a gang, one in which he served as the brains to assist the others' brawn. While they never committed any particularly heinous acts and they disbanded after a year, it nonetheless made the students fear him all the more. Still, though, Jules was at the mercy of the Rosemariné family, and due to a series of events, Arion had become just as emotionally dependent on Jules as Jules was financially dependent on him (leading to a completely different set of rumours).
To that end, Jules began to serve as what could best be described as Arion's partner in studies and assistant, although, really, things were far more complicated than that. And when Arion decided that he wanted to transfer to Hogwarts after his fifth year in order to gain a wider education, it was only natural for Jules to follow. He was a bit less clingy to Arion after that, what with them being further from their families, although of course he could never really forget about him for very long. Ultimately, what was important wasn't that, but gaining the skills he needed to be a strong, successful wizard, no matter what it took.
