Appearance: Short at only a little above 5’, Nina looks so out-of-style and somewhat out-of-place for her time that it’s horribly jarring. During a time when short hair and waves are the fashion, she maintains this sort of weird hairstyle where her bangs, particularly her side bangs, are longer than the rest of her hair. Dark brown and straight, her hair is only just barely long enough to be pulled back and tied with a ribbon, leaving the bangs alone. It’s the result of a botched attempt to cut her hair herself, but she seems to actually like it despite what anyone else may say. Her visible range of expression is limited for most of the part, usually appearing neutral or vaguely not amused, not helped by how her blue eyes give this impression of coldness.
Nina more or less sticks to school dresscode, other than lengthening her skirts a bit more than the usual for the simple reason that she prefers it that way. Outside of the uniform she wears modest outfits and hats, the latter usually made by herself. There’s a distinct lack of accessories otherwise, apart from the occasional ribbon or two. It is very, very, very obvious that she likes the colour blue - if she can help it, she’ll be wearing something blue on her.
Personality: Nina is…well, frankly, she’s a little dull. At a glance she looks emotionless, which isn’t exactly far from the truth, which would be she is calm. Very, very calm. Naturally low-key, she’s so ridiculously deadpan that some may find it funny or mildly unsettling. There are few things she’d bat an eyelash at, let alone flinch. She accepts the weird and strange without much fuss, or at least is willing to put aside any misgivings about them to focus on more important things. She’s not a very social creature, though she normally doesn’t mind company - she just doesn’t seek it out much.
The thing about Nina is that everything is Serious Business to her. Everything. She is frighteningly dedicated to whatever task or responsibility she is given, doing them efficiently and with little complaint. Reliable, hardworking, resourceful; she’s all the sort of words you’d give to someone with a good work ethic. Despite her dour demeanour she’s perfectly willing to give help to anyone who asks, though some of the younger students are hesitant to do so because of said dourness. It’s a little intimidating.
In some ways, she’s a workaholic, always studying or doing work or sewing in her room. She attempts to shoulder responsibility all by herself even when it might be too much for her; it doesn’t occur to her that she could share the workload with someone else, since she’s so used to being the only real responsible one for a long while. It’s the sort of thing that could one day lead to her simply burning out, though this hasn’t happened yet.
Once people get to know her better however, they quickly realize a few things. Beneath that limited range of facial expressions lies a surprising degree of empathy and capacity to care for other people. In fact, Nina has this terrible tendency to mom at people, particularly her own family and anyone she considers to be under her charge for whatever the reason. She’s just bad at expressing these, being somewhat painfully blunt and no-nonsense.
Admittedly, she’s not a very ladylike pseudo-mom figure despite her hobbies and habits otherwise - she’s a lot stronger than her small stature implies, and is fully capable of throwing a mean punch or two. She’s more likely to hit someone first before getting the bandages and telling them to stop hurting themselves, damn it. Nonetheless, Nina can become very protective of people she cares about, going so far as to put herself in harm’s way (literally, if need be) for the sake of their safety.
History: Nina was born as the second child out of four to a pair of German immigrants in New York, as well as being the only daughter. Her father ran a beer garden until Prohibition shut it down and worked as a labourer thereafter, while her mother ran a hat store. Due to post-war sentiments, Nina grew up speaking German at home, but speaking English everywhere else - her parents wanted the children to remain fluent in their mother tongue, but otherwise recognized that it was best kept unheard as much as possible in public.
With both parents busy with work most of the time, the children were almost always left to their own devices at some point. Nina, who was taught how to sew and cook (although she is far better at the former than the latter), was often the de-facto “responsible one” whenever their parents were absent. Her older brother was largely irresponsible until later in his life, and both he and the younger brother often got into scrapes or fights with other kids, or just plain trouble. Since she was usually the first person to find out about any injuries they may have acquired, Nina ended up developing some serious mothering tendencies from having to bandage them on a fairly regular basis.
(Said older brother was also the one who somehow thought it was a good idea to teach Nina how to throw a punch. It went horribly right.)
When she was 13, her father fell ill and eventually passed away in his sleep. The event sort of inadvertently set off several other incidents. Her older brother started to clean up his act, for starters. Some time after her father’s funeral, the family was visited by an uncle, a brother of their father with whom he had a strained relationship with. Rich but highly eccentric, when he found out about the family’s situation, he offered to sponsor the children’s schooling. Though business still managed to more or less thrive despite the economy, her mother was having difficulty supporting the family on her income alone, and accepted the uncle’s proposition, believing this to be a chance to give the kids a good education.
Nina went along with it with little resistance, if only because her mother practically forced her to stay in school and she could finally trust her older brother to be able to hold down the fort. At 14 years old, she was enrolled at Adessi Hall, where she has been studying since and quietly integrated into.
Weapon: Tailoring scissors. May eventually graduate to an actual stabby weapon later.
Stats: Strength, Vitality, Magic, Agility, Luck
Persona: Justitia (Roman goddess of Justice who is equivalent to the Greek goddess Dike. An allegorical personification of the moral force in judicial systems.)
Strength: Wind
Weakness: Status
Primary Skillset: Slash physical → Pierce
Secondary Skillset: Recovery
Other: She actually has a German accent, though most people never hear it because she is deliberately suppressing it. It tends to slip out when she’s caught off-guard or otherwise speaking without thinking. One of her younger brothers also attends Adessi Hall as a sophomore, with a reputation for being hot-blooded and rather bad-tempered.
