[Some of the neighbors to 1646 Albright Lane may have heard a woman screaming out. Anyone inside or within a few yards of the house would have heard that what she had screamed out on waking up bolt upright in bed was "Harry ( Read more... )

Nope. No way. Not you, too, Lils. This isn't happening. Go find your husband and promptly tell him to stop existing, thank you very much.

Padfoot! [do you remember this scolding tone, Sirius?] I will do no such thing, thank you very much.

[Oh lord, that tone. He can't help but wince a little. Okay... maybe she was real. He almost sounds surprised when he says,]

...Lily?

Merlin's beard.

How are you- how did you get- are you with James?

Yes, last I saw he was here in... whoever's house this is. I'm guessing it's supposed to be ours.

Are you alright, Padfoot?

No, Lils, I'm not. I... you died, Lily, both of you.

I... I thought that was what happened. [there's silence for a minute before she finds her voice again, but she's sounding as if she's about to cry now] Sirius... I'm so sorry. I-I'd never have thought... Wormy was our friend. He was all our friend....

No Lils, it was my fault, I never should have... if I hadn't suggested... I got you killed, Lily, I never meant- I'm so sorry...

Sirius Black, don't you dare blame yourself! [the return of the sharp, scolding tone!] James and I agreed to it, we could have said no... it's not your fault. We could have kept you as Secret Keeper, but we didn't. We all thought we could trust him....

((Emmyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy get on AIM before I pass out. ;3;))

[He's going to give a derisive little snort. Even the scolding tone couldn't change his views on the matter.] And some job I've done with the aftermath. Thirteen years in Azkaban, and I make it up to my godson with a racing broom.

All those years with those muggles. Lily, your sister is a horrible woman.

((Toph, my love <333))

[She nearly drops the phone in shock there.] You were in Azkaban?! Padfoot, tell me what happened!

[And then... the anxiety in her voice slowly fades off, to be replaced by something more appropriately stunned. Suddenly, her mouth is feeling dry.] ...My sister. Do you mean to say that Tuney and Vernon raised Harry? Padfoot... she doesn't like magic, not at all, not since I went to Hogwarts. Vernon hates it worse than her. Oh Merlin... why did he have to go there?

[You can practically hear him running his hands through his hair.] Think about it, Lily. The only people that knew about the switch? You, James, me, and Peter.

It was Dumbledore's idea. [He almost sounds bitter. Strike that, he does sound bitter. And maybe a little childish had not having got his way, i.e, custody of his godson.] Some rubbish about blood magic. Doesn't matter if he's got all the wards in the world to keep Voldemort away if your fat muggle brother in law beats him to death. Apparently the rest of the Order didn't see it that way.

Oh my God... we should have told someone else.... Dumbledore, Remus, Moody, one of the Order... but we knew there was a leak somewhere....

[And here comes the gentle reproach...] Now Sirius, I'm sure Dumbledore had good intentions, with whatever blood magic he invoked. There's no way he could have known about Tuney being as she is... I mean to say, I never told him about her anti-magic views. And surely Vernon wouldn't kill Harry. He might be worse than my sister in some regards, but I don't think he stoop to murdering my son.

No, I suppose he didn't know, keeping Harry locked away there. Nobody was allowed to know, didn't even bother to check on the boy. Just started slumping responsibilities on him.

[Somberly.] You didn't see him, Lily. When I escaped, when I watched him in that muggle house, talking trash about you, threatening him, half starved to death... He'd known I was innocent all of ten minutes, and he agreed to live with me. Never met me before, that he can remember anyway. What sort of happy, sensible person does that?

[He doesn't get an answer right off. In fact, by the time he finished, there were tears falling down her face. She put the phone to her shoulder for a moment and wiped her eyes on the hem of the nightdress she had woken up in. When she was calm, she sat down and put the phone back to her ear.]

I want to see him... I want to see Harry and... apologize for my family. I never knew... never would have dreamed that they'd mistreat him so horribly....
