When one feels a desire to revisit an area that a fondness exists for,
just take time to go there and rediscover why you liked it so much to
begin with. Especially if the distance is 78 miles or
so. A drawn out "fiasco" of a film that rests somewhere
between here and there, and everywhere in between (and a bit north of
as well) is no way try to recapture this feeling of contentment.
Even though I was prepared to see this movie based soley on the name
and setting, the movie was still terribly silly. Too many
characters, too little focus, pointless and fake obstacles that draw
the romance of Drew and Claire out farther than the extended path
"Drew" traveled from the Louisville airport to E'town, all orbiting
around a movie star that couldn't act his way out of a paper bag sans
some sort of archaic piece of weaponry.
Sure, there were some sea level points of the movie such as the reunion
of Ruckus and their persistance to play on during a fire and resulting
sprinkler downpour, however, the relentless forces of shaky acting and
spotty dialogue left this film under a few feet of standing
water. The only interesting sub-characters were left largely
undeveloped, and key connections that could have been made about the
relationships between Drew and his father, Jesse and his father, and
Jesse and his own son never really came to fruition. Sad, as
Jesse could have been a character that was filled out more in the
film. And what about Drew's parents former engagements?
Were those former engagements their "substitute people"? Claires
analogy to her and Drew being substitute people made no sense, as both
had no one. Had they both been in complicated relationships with
people who put other endeavors ahead of them, it could have made
sense. Or at least tied back into Drew's parents meeting by
chance in an elevator. As is, I don't really see the point.
But I digress.
I do think my obsession with shoes, a portion of my name, and my
fathers name were used inexplicably thoughout the film. Without
permission, I might add. . . hehe.
The one day that filming was done in Elizabethtown, it rained the whole
day through. Downtown was shut down all day. Leaving I-65
via exit 94 as usual for my long trip from east Louisville, I was
forced to turn around before the underpass beneath the rail road due to
high water. Exit 91 or whatever it is was my only option, and
luckily filming had apparantly ended long before I came through.
I do remember the radio station sign saying "We will miss you
Mitch".
