The Thirteenth Annual Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize

First of all, I might be late, but happy Bday
riddledfate

Steve Martin: It would be easy to stay here and for few minutes talk about Tina Fey’s brilliance, hew wit, her accomplishments in television and film, but this seems neither the time or place.

I once asked Tina… would you rather be remembered as a comedian or as a writer, Tina paused for a moment and she said “Steve this is the women’s restroom”.

… and now a man who needs no introduction.. [leaves the stage]

Jimmy Fallon: That reminds me of a song me and Bono once write about Tina Fey, if you don’t mind I’d like to sing it right now...

Tina, you
Are a comedy inspiration
30 Rock and SNL
Your Sarah Palin impersonation
You wrote your own jokes
You wrote all of my jokes too
You were born in 1970
I mean… 1982
Beautiful Fey
We told jokes on Saturday
Beautiful Fey
You kept it a secret that I was gay.

Why’d you guys stop playing?

Amy Pohler: Tina, I am so honored to be able to attend your comedy Bat Mitzvah tonight. So far the food has been excellent, and your Evita theme is really working.

While Mark Twain comedy looked at the life of a small-town America to explore the growth of a cultural landscape, Tina Fey comedy looks at the life of Tina Fey as she makes out with John Hamm and Matt Damon. Well played, my friend. Well played.

Our dreams were as big as our unshaped eyebrows.

I love you sister!

Steve Carell: It’s not only I honor to be here tonight, it’s a contractual obligation.
I would like to speak about another one of her talents-improvisation, the ability to create without the guidance of script or preconceived notion. This is a discipline in which Tina Fey has flourished.

Tina and I dated briefly back in Chicago, to be fare we only went out once. Remember?... .Yes you do.
… I was extremely sorry when she had to leave early that night, I do hope your cat is feeling better.
She has the ability to make something out of nothing… which is why I steel believe that our relationship could have worked.
For the record and for followers of Wikipedia-Tina and I have never actually went out on date.
I’m however and enormous fan and I’m proud to be her friend.

Fred Armisen: Tina, like me, is all about the money. Creativity is great but we like to get paid. Recently at a memorial service of a dear friend, she told me that 30 Rock generates a 5 share in all the key demos, a 3 share in the 18-35 demo, a 6 share in the 35-60 and a staggering 22 share in the 65 to 100. I asked her “Tina what all these numbers mean?” and she said- “It means I’m getting PAID.”

John Hamm: Sometimes I wonder what would have been if I had taken that role on 30 Rock, at the end of the day- Tracy Morgan was better for the part. Tina you are the best, thank you for everything.

Alec Bowdoin as Mark Twain: The point is why I am here tonight. I’m here because this evening we are awarding the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, you know I always thought my legacy would be as a tender and knowing lover, but I guess all those women found me to be hilarious instead… Interesting. Tonight’s recipient of the Me Prize is very talented and observing Tina Fey. Tina, that’s a funny name for a man. What? You are kidding… for humor? No, no sir!... Twain out.

Tracy Morgan: I met Tina in 1997 at SNL. We got to know each other even thou we came from a very different backgrounds. She grew up in projects in Brooklyn and was discovered while doing stand up at the Apolo. I grew up in the nice suburbs of Philadelphia and graduated from UVA.
Tina and I had a lot of good times together, I remember one time we were parting after show and Tina said “Tray let’s go to another strip club!” and I was like “Tina, it’s 6 in the morning! We have to stop drinking and go home.”And she said “The night I go home before 6 is the night I no longer want to live.” You know what? That was Johnny Depp wearing glasses; Tina and I never hang out.

I love you Tina, you are my sister from another mother with a different color. You are funny, fearless and the coolest girl on the block, from my heart to you. I mean that.

Betty White: I’m so proud of Tina. She is so deserving and the fact she’s been in the business only for 5 minutes makes her achievement even more special. She is so young; I just hope I can hang on long enough to see what she accomplishes when she learns to drive. And the wonderful thing is Tina Fey never had to sleep with anyone to get where she is. She just put out that she is a nymphomaniac!

In closing I just want to say- Beautiful lady congratulations with all my heart!

Seth Meyers: You often hear people say how hard it is for women in comedy, but I have to say when I hear that I always say do you know how hard it is being the guy who had to follow Tina Fey!
Once again, we are here tonight because Tina won something!

Lorne Michaels: As I stand here, I want to honor her, and talk about her work, I can’t help but think to myself- what a gift!

Tina Fey: I never thought I would even qualify for the Mark Twain prize for American humor. Maybe the Nathanial Hawthorne prize for judgmental nature. Or the Judy Blume award for awkward puberty. Or the Harper Lee prize for small bodies of work - But never this!

And just like Mark Twain, I hope that 100 years from now people will see my work and think, “Wow. That’s pretty racist.”

I do hope women are achieving at a rate that we can stop counting what number they are. Yes, I was the first female head writer on SNL, and I was only the second woman to ever be pregnant on the show, and now I'm the third woman to win this prize . . . But I'm not going to get emotional tonight because I'm a stone cold b*tch.

It's thought many comics come from difficult or troubling childhoods. [Looking up at her family in the box] They're giving me the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, What did you animals do to me?

I'm so proud to represent American humor. I'm proud to be American. I'm proud to make my home in the 'not real' America. And I'm most proud that even during trying times like an orange alert, or a bad economy, or a contentious election, that we as a nation retain our sense of humor.

Anyway, I don’t want to go on and on and on, because I know
we still have to talk about the other four nominees.
So, thank you, and good night.
