Title:
The Syntax Of ThingsAuthor:
what_alchemyFandom: Sherlock
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Summary: When John looked at him, Sherlock felt whole, felt like he was who he was meant to be. Not a freak, an oddity, or a monster in-between.
“If you must know, Sebastian wants to take me out for dinner.”
John went military-still, then set down the box of spaghetti in his hand. He turned very slowly to face Sherlock.
“That tosser from the bank?” he asked, nose wrinkled. “Oh Sherlock, tell me you told him where to stick it.”
“I was considering accepting, actually.” In fact he had not considered any such thing. Sebastian was a grave mistake best kept locked deep in the recesses of the Magdalene files, which he couldn’t afford to delete, despite Sebastian’s irksome presence among the more valuable information. But the prospect of being seen for what he was - and wanted thereof - was a temptation that loomed sudden and overwhelming, even if he knew damn well he’d hate himself for it afterwards. Whatever else he was, whatever else he did, Sebastian preferred men - and sometimes, he preferred men with Sherlock’s particular… physical charms. John Watson was nothing more than an achey false hope, and a straight one at that.
“You could do better,” John blurted. He’d flushed, and his breath had gone a touch shallow. Sherlock narrowed his eyes. “That Sebastian bloke is a prick and you needn’t lower yourself to… that.”
“Honestly, John,” Sherlock snapped. “Who would have me?”
This was a pretty good look at a trans Sherlock, someone who isn't interested in, or perhaps just hasn't had access to a wider community of people like him. There's one scene where he picks a woman out of the crowd, someone he identified as being 'like him', he follows her and seems astonished by the normalcy of her life. The way she's confident and unconcerned. His isolation and the way he expects John to react to his secret the way the rest of the people in his life has is so sad.
