Heh. When I first started writing it, the big reveal wasn't that Karl didn't know John was dead, it was that Dean would let Karl continue to think that. The ghost thing came later when I saw some unintentional foreshadowing that seemed to open a possibility that was just too much fun to pass up once I thought about it.

*snerk* on the whole conversation with John thing. I was vey much playing that (and it was one of the reasons I wrote the fic in the first place) as if John was speaking to Dean's pain after his death and before his resurrection instead of the assumption of him speaking to what he appeared to speak to. Because you KNOW I think John is coming back, so I thought it would be great fun to play it as if John kind of sent a message of sorts to Dean through this guy, it just didn't come through the way it was probably intended to.

And to some degree, I also plwyed with the notion that Karl actually saw John in the chapel AFTER he died where our assumption is that he saw John there before he went down to meet the demon. I left that very under-the-radar just because I wanted to leave the notion open, but not really even go so far as to imply it, but there was something that appealed to me about a ghost talking to a ghost ... especially if Karl was already dead at the time he saw John after he died, but John knew Karl was going to go see his boys before he could move on.

That almost became the story I told, but I felt this was a little stronger simply by being left outside the actual narrowing it down to such a specific explanation of things, and I wanted to make sure I kept your eye off the ball until the reveal of what was going on with Karl, which I really wanted to come as a total "holy crap!" like Sammy would be feeling about then.
