Oh, that was so sweet, little Dean all angry at the world for hurting his mommy and daddy (and himself) and still not capable of killing that innocent frog (hey, I dig frogs!). And him not talking, just breaks my heart, just as the moment he did speak again did. Poor baby!

And Jim...Oh man, I love that guy! I'm so sad that we didn't see more of him on the show, but we writers are changing that.

"You suppose it’s dead yet?"

That dry humor made me smile.

Thanks. I have a fascination with the concept of Dean not talking after his mother's murder. I've tried to deal with that timeframe before, but it always comes out so overly angsty I'm not happy with the result.

This seemed more desparate, and more new ... like the grief hasn't had time to settle in yet. And someone had mentioned Jim's influence on Dean in conjunction with "The Father I Should Be," which put me to mind of thinking what kind of influence that might be.

Letting him poke holes in a hymn book with a sharp pencil seemed like the kind of thing Jim might understand would help.

Thank you. I hadn't really considered Jim much prior to this, but he seems like he was such a steadying influence on John, I wanted to see how he would deal with an angry Dean.

Hee. Dean Winchester: Grass Assassin. :)

Ah, a Pastor Jim fic. I really like the work people are doing with the men in John Winchester's network. This is a terrific addition *bookmarks*

"Everything is a choice, Dean," Jim said quietly. "You can chose to destroy, or you can chose not to destroy."

This just got to me, given Dean's anguish over his kills in Devil's Trap. Dean is a destroyer, of evil things, but he doesn't want to bring destruction; but what he destroys are things that bring destruction. So it evens out, but does Dean realize that? And at the time of your story, facing his role as a hunter/destroyer is far in the future. So sad.

Lovely John and Dean moment at the end. I like how you used the frog, it was symbolic but not heavy-handed, and I liked Jim's observation about who is holding the stick.

I think Jim would be more real than this, admitting he can't understand it either, and trying to help Dean understand it's okay to be angry and confused and hurtI really love your take on Jim. His conversation with Meg suggests he wasn't just a platitude-spouting cleric. In that brief scene we have of him, he seems like he genuinely cared about people, and spent time seriously thinking about this stuff ( ... )

awww, that was sweet! I like how Dean couldn't kill the innocent little frog.

err, I was just wondering... this is you right? http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1025382/
Cause the a few stories are the same, only with a different penname

Yup, that's me. I did all my Trek publishing under that pen name, and because I established that archive mostly for Trekkers who were haranging me for out of print material (although, oddly enough, I still haven't archived much of that there cause I'm having too much fun in SPN!), figured I'd better stick with the name they knew rather than putting it under my online ID. Thanks for checking though ... I appreciate people keeping their eyes peeled for stuff like that ... it's amazing how bold people can be.

Eek, you got the angry child behaviour down. And the newly-grieving John.

"Hey, bud," John said quietly.

Dean is so unlike John that I think Jim helps explain another influence on him. Certainly does here.

Thank you. I think that is part of what draws me to this story. The newness of the grief. That John hasn't even had time to become angry yet. That he's just lying in a dark room, holding on to his child, staring at the nothingness ( ... )

I think it might be interesting to explore Jim's influence on Dean, especially in spiritual terms. I may have to write something more in depth some time...

Ooo, that does sound good. I'm here when you're ready!
