I think that John saying he's proud of Dean would mean more than hearing him say "I love you"

I think Dean knows John loves him - okay it would be nice if John could say it ever - but I get the feeling that Dean isn't quite sure if John's actually proud of him.

I absolutely agree with you. And I think John would know that ... thus the real reason I had John tell him he was proud of him, rather than that he loved him. ;)
