SPN Fic: The Human Factor

Okay, this one kinda went the weird way around the block before it got here.

I started out writing a SPN_500 Challenge ficlet just cause I was bored, and this notion appealed to me in a much longer applications, but I didn't really want to go as angsty as it wanted to be in a longer form, so I thought I'd give her a whirl in the 500 words or less ( Read more... )

LOL. Guess my assumption was correct then, yes? :D I'm not a huge fan of either first person nor stream of consciousness on the usual, but Hoeg does it so well I kinda have to read him anyway, and am always well rewarded for my willingness to stray outside the box of my normal tastes. Neil Gaiman does that for me with fantasy, too. I'm SO not a fantasy girl, but for him? I'll except.

And friend away! I can't see how anyone can object to friending. It boggles me. I'll mutual us, post haste. And if there's anything I can do to help in the niche carving, gimme a holler. Anyone who's into the complexity of the John and Dean relationship AND meta is my kind of flister!

SPN fic recs, eh? Hmmm ... let me think on that to give you a couple of really good intro pieces. First impressions are so important. On a general overview though, my flist is comprised almost exclusively of those whose brains and/or fanfic make me squee, so if someone's there and they fanfic, pretty good bet I'm reading it.

Just off the top of my head though, Troll Princess hits me square where I live with her voices of da boys, and the way she spins the humor card. And Monica Marinov does great character action ... stories that are so much fun to read I wanna see them filmed. And Tigriswolf has got a really dark turn of mind, but her stuff is enough to kill you dead on the spot, if you don't mind her leaving blood on your bones in the aftermath.

Lemme see if I can find some specific stories to start you on your way. A lot of times, I hunt recs off the SPN newsletter ... especially recs that are made by fanfic writers I read. I'm not a slasher in any fandom, so recs of that color aren't something of which I have any ken; but there are lots of reccers out there who rec that almost exclusively, so if that's your sqee, I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding it.

Let me go merrily and hunt up some recs for you. I love doing that.

I admire the willingness to play out of your own box of tastes, there is so much to learn out there.

I don't understand either, about the not friending back, I friend automatically back whoever friends me, even those that do not make any effort to talk with me sooner or later (and always am left wondering why in the first place they were friending). As for myself I always ask anyway, sign of politeness or insecurity whatever you call it.

And thank you very much, I'll take you up on your offer soon. This fandom scares me a bit because it is huge (I usually prefer little, comfy places).

No I'm not a slasher, I have slashed almost by chance, and always using it a step further to understand a character. In this fandom, though, I can't see myself getting involved in the incest, and here I hope I'm not putting a foot in my mouth the first day or our friendship (that would be a record even for me :D) and I really shouldn't talk of things I don't know much about or don't understand but there is something that ticks me off in a sexual/romantica relationship between Sam and Dean.

Now if it was something dark and twisted and scary, maybe that I could buy. This isn't in any way something that is meant to affirm a moral superiority, far from it, actually. Whatever rocks your boat, right?

Yes, go hunt me down some recs (those stories that leave me gasping and aching in their wake, are the ones I'm in the mood to read right now) who I am to deny you some fun, especially when it is going to be so rewarding for me ;)

*so much love for your icon*

I don't necessarily automatically friend back, just 'cause if someone hasn't ever said anything to me, I kinda tend to think they may just want to keep an eye on either the fanfic or the metas, but they're not looking for a mutual chat, which I can respect. I do always try to visit their user info page to see what they're into though; cause I'm not at all shy about friending someone if they're into a lot of the same things I am, or if I love their voice in the way they talk in their LJ.

I've never really gotten into the slash aspect myself, I suppose because most of the characters on which I squee aren't characters I find revealed by this particular fan convention. But I don't have anything against it either, just not my cup of tea.

And I find many of the best writers in several fandoms are also slash writers. If I like somone's character work well enough, I won't reject the notion of slash out of hand. ELG can get me to read Jack/Daniel even though I couldn't be less convinced that it's a viable possibility in any universe at all. But I just love her writing so much, I think I'd read it if she posted a phone book listing.

On the SPN of that dynamic, I understand your reluctance to stand loudly on the subject. Seems it is a bit of a fen sorespot, no?

As with most things in life, however, I'm not much of one to have issues with anyone doing mostly what they want to do -- especially in terms of writing -- as long as they mark it clearly so I don't unintentionally run into something that's going to put me in a not-happy place. Like many others in this fandom, I can't believe the Sam/Dean thing less, and I'm not looking to read it myself, but I'm fine with others pursuing whatever reading or writing squees make them happy.

Far more touchy for me are the fics that play non-con or wee!slash as a subject of titilation. Equally, the John/eitherboy thing twitches me at a primal spot at the base of the spine that keens in horror at the mere mention. Again, I do my best to keep my judgements in the realm of what I am, or am not, interested in reading; but even the best writers can't lure me into those 3 subject areas, as I have to work too hard not to be actively offended by the notion, rather than merely disinterested in the subject matter.

I've got your recs posted now. It was great fun to revisit some of my favorite tales. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

And the icon? That thing cracks me up every time I see it, too. onesunset made it, and sometimes I'm tempted to post to my LJ just so I can use it as a userpic and sit there and laugh. :D
