Fic: Each, Their Own - Justified, PG-13, Angst, Gen, Pre-Series, Raylan & Boyd

So, about two weeks late, but here is the "Justified" fic I wrote for ranua's birthday! I actually had it finished two weeks early but I have been doing all my posting from my laptop and this fic isn't on my laptop. Anyways, thank you for your patience, babe - I hope you enjoy it! Look, my first official Justified fic!! Like writing Raylan and Boyd isn't hard enough, I had to throw in the extra challenge of writing teenaged Raylan and Boyd.

Summary: A conversation between two teenage boys who are not as far apart as they think. In fact, they are so close, they are nearly touching. Angst, Gen, Pre-Series, Raylan and Boyd, PG-13 for mentions of child abuse with 640 words.

Dedication: For ranua, who not only let me have long drawn out conversations about the nature of Raylan and Boyd’s history together, but who actually encouraged it. This fic is what you get for being such an enabler, babe! Happy Birthday!

Author's Notes: I seriously had five different ideas for ranua’s birthday fic and writing a Justified one was the farthest back in my mind. I just figured there was no chance I could capture their unique way of speaking. But then none of the other stories were really sticking in my head, so I thought I’d give one shot to attempting to capture a voice that sounded teenaged and Harlan at once. I don’t know what happened but as soon as I focused, I zeroed in on it. I am beyond pleased with how it came out.

It wasn’t a lake. To even call it a pond was a bit too flattering.

It was a water hole, plain and simple. It was the place where you went to smoke your cigarettes and drink your whiskey. It was the place you took your girl to make-out.

It was the place Raylan went to get away from the anger that slithered through his house like the Kentucky rattlesnake.

It was where he’d been sitting for long enough now that the night had worn away to the fresh soft colors of morning.

Long enough that he could see in the reflection of the water how the bruise around his eye had started to turn, dark and seeping into his skin.

“Raylan Givens,” a voice said and Raylan turned to see Boyd Crowder standing but ten feet away, duffel thrown over his shoulder.

“Crowder,” he replied and watched while Boyd made his way over, the slightest of limps weighing his every step.

Raylan was fourteen, but that was far old enough to recognize the sight of someone who had recently had the switch taken to his backside.

Boyd made to settle on the ground next to him and Raylan looked away, gave Boyd the decency of not being stared at while he breathed through the pain of the rough ground beneath his wounds.

They sat in silence for a few long moments then, nothing but the sound of the first bird song between them.

Then Boyd asked, “How long you been out here?”

“Long enough to get hungry,” Raylan told him, without looking over.

Boyd opened his duffel and pulled out a box of crackers, handed it over.

“Thanks,” Raylan said and he honestly meant it. Crowders weren’t known for sharing.

“What’s with the duffel?” he asked after a minute more of silence. “You runnin’?”

“Thinkin’ ‘bout it.”

“Yeah? Where to?” because as far as Raylan knew, there weren’t nowhere to run to in these hills.

Boyd shrugged. “Dunno. Someplace Daddy and Bowman ain’t,” and he tossed a stone out into the water, watched it sink down to the bottom where it would stay for all time.

“Sometimes I think Harlan is like a Twilight Zone episode,” Raylan told him. “When you get to the county limits and cross over, then all of a sudden you’re back in the middle of it again.”

“No way out?” Boyd asked.

“Most days it don’t feel like it.”

“Maybe we could get out together,” Boyd said and stared out across the water. “Just go and never look back.”

“Yeah? Like out west maybe? Start a detective agency or somethin’.”

“I was thinkin’ we’d be bounty hunters. Who knows how to catch criminals better ’n two guys raised up by criminals?”

Raylan smiled, soft and kind of sad like. “Think we’ll make it to being old enough where we can actually go? Think we’ll make it that long in this disease of a place?”

Boyd leaned a little towards him, not so as they were touchin’ but close enough Raylan felt a little warmth at his side.

“Did you know there are actual living creatures on the floor of the ocean?” Boyd asked.

“How’s that?”

“All the way on the floor of the ocean. Miles below the surface and they like live down there. They’d have to be some pretty hard-edged life forms to live in a place like that.”

Raylan let out a long breath, watched the puffs of it dissipate in front of him on the morning air. “People can’t breathe under water, Boyd. We’d suffocate.”

“Then I guess we’ll just have to hold our breaths until we break the surface, Raylan.”

“Alright,” Raylan said and neither of them spoke again for a long while.

They just sat there then, ‘til the world called them home and they went each their own way.
