So I need your opinion, guys. My sister donates to a different charity every month through her church, but this year she has decided to donate to two additional charities outside of her church, looking for something a little more liberal, I guess. She has decided to do this to try to help offset a tiny bit of some of the things that people will be ( Read more... )

I tried to fill out your poll, but when I got here, all I saw were results...no way to vote. ???

Hmm, that usually only happens if you've already voted in the poll.

I would have chosen !) Disability political lobby group and 2) Keep looking for a disability charity.

As it ended up, I decided to do 3 charities. So I chose the home for runaway LGBTQA youth (Ruth Ellis Foundation out of Detroit), Standing Rock tribe to help aid their fight against the oil line & a small nearby disability charity that gives mobility aids for free to those in need. Though eventually I stopped donating to the disability center, I'm ashamed to say, because they had no 'recurring donation' setup, like the other 2 did, so I kept forgetting every month to go to their site and make the donation. So now I sort of rotate the 3rd donation. Like this month our local humane Society took in 34 dogs rescued from a puppy mill and are very strapped for cash to support them, so I donated there. Last month I donated to an organization in Flint, MI giving out gifts and stuffed stockings and winter coats to the children of Flint (one of the poorest cities in the country, right here in my state).

It's going to be vitally important to have people lobbying on behalf of the disabled. The ignoramus who's headed to the White House sure doesn't care much about them.

Well, you were not wrong about that. The disabled community has lived in fear and fight all year long. And now the government wants to strip the CHIP healthcare program from poor children. WTF.

And I really like the idea of finding a charity that makes aids available to people who need them, for as long as they need them, even for life.

The place I found was founded by two brothers, one who was in a serious accident and then needed a multitude of assistive devices and mobility aids and could not get any of it covered by his insurance, despite having decent insurance at the time. His brother, who became his caretaker, was outraged trying to find him help and finally was like, "There are no charities to help us." So they started one! And now they run this thing full time and buy new equipment, take donated equipment and fix broken equipment for the disabled in mid-Michigan.
