My Comic Con post, at last! It was about 1 1/2 hours of a drive, but my dad gave me birthday money so we could get a hotel room. That eliminated an extra three hours a day for us, thankfully. Dad also gave me an extra $100 and when I said, "Oh, good, for buying souvenirs," he said, "No, I want a picture of Batman and Robin!" Which is how I ended up getting a photo op with Adam West and Burt Ward. That was pretty cool though, because that's really how I got into comics was by watching the reruns of the 1960s Batman show with my dad and having a crush on Robin at like age 6. It'll be a nice gift to give him, all framed up.
We drove there Friday late morning in time to catch James Marsters' panel, which was my whole reason for going really. I always said the only reason I'd go to a con as big as CC was for James or Adam Baldwin and when The BFF saw he would be there, she was like, "Um...hey." He was enthusiastic and very open. He dared the audience to try and embarrass him with their questions and they could not. His first question was about kissing John Barrowman and he said that he has learned now that if he is going to do a kissing scene to shave right before, because kissing stubble is not fun. He talked a lot about Tony Head and how Tony couldn't stand Spike's accent and finally started working with him to get each word right. And how James realized he knew nothing about TV acting and started coming on set to watch Tony's scenes, so he could learn how to tone it down from stage to screen. He is still clearly smitten with Juliet Landau too.
Here is the whole panel, if you're interested, it's well worth the watch. It went over the time, so we missed the Sharknado panel, but it was worth it.
We wandered around the exhibit hall a bit, spent an hour in Artist Alley, where I bought a Spiderman bookmark for The Nephew (seemed only fair since it was his birthday that day) and a Star Trek recruitment art piece for The BFF and talked to some cool artists. Then we went to the vendors and looked at all of that, ran out of a tshirt shop before we bought out the whole place, lol. They had a varsity style Star Fleet Academy jacket that I really wanted and Sis wanted to get TN an Xavier's Institute school uniform sweater, but we restrained ourselves.
Then I went to get my James autograph, but the line was kind of long and Graham McTavish was right next to him. He had just sat down, so there was only one person there, and he was wearing a kilt and omg, my sister talked me into it! Also we found out you can get a selfie for $20 bucks, so I got an autograph and a selfie with him. He was really nice, but I couldn't say much. I wasn't ready, I hadn't prepared, it was my first thing in years, omg! Sis talked to him for a bit though. We were sad we missed his panel, but it conflicted with James'.
At James' autograph line, anyone who was dressed up from any show he'd done, he asked them to film a short clip for a Facebook video of cosplay he was putting together. A Buffy cosplayer was in line in front of us and when she went up, he yelled, "Buffy! I missed you, love!" When it was my turn, I told him how I'd been sober for six years (he high-fived me) and that in the middle of the night during detox, watching Buffy was all that kept me sane, and how much I identified with s6 Spike during that time. He talked about how good the NA program can be and he stumbled for a bit and said. "It's anonymous, so I won't say anymore, but it's a good program." I didn't wanna mention how I'd met Nicky Brendon when he was sober or bring it up, since he's doing poorly these days, but it was nice and he was so personable and seemed to really love meeting his fans.
I was flying pretty high from that interaction, not gonna lie. By the time we got done with all that, The BFF had driven up from work, so we met her for dinner and then went to our hotel - a really nice suite, apparently Residence Inn only does suites - and I ended up going right to sleep at nine, with the help of a muscle relaxer.
This has gotten longer than I thought, so I'll do Saturday later this week. Friday was a really great day though!
