My review of the past TV season's finales

May 25, 2007 09:20

For the TV shows that I follow, anyway. It seemed more efficient to wait for these shows to all wrap up before posting my thoughts, vs. posting one entry for each series. SPOILERS ABOUND.

God bless the US viewers who upload torrents for the fan(atic)s in other countries.

Desperate Housewives - great cliff-hanger in the season ender. Much as I hated most of the entire season, I will be watching just to find out what happens to Edie and Lynette.

Heroes - everybody loves this show and everybody loves Hiro. He's my favorite character too, but Claire is a very close second. She's just played so wonderfully by Hayden Panettiere. Characters I don't like and wish would have died in the finale: Mohinder. ANG CORNY ng mga voice-over niya. Niki. Her battles with Jessica are boring boring boring. You would think I would hate Sylar too but the actor is just so good that I find myself watching with bated breath what evil Sylar will do next. That BOOM at the end of one of the last episodes? Nakakakilabot, it was so creepy. Sadly the season finale was quite disappointing. Some nitpicks: why did Nathan have to "save" his biological daughter from shooting Peter? Couldn't Peter have flown away by himself, why did Nathan have to die too? (or are they really dead?) Did Sylar also have to die (or did he?) because like I said he's fun to watch.

... I wrote something on Prison Break and the awesomeness of the Lost finale but it looks like LJ ate those parts because they've disappeared. And I'm too lazy to type them all out again :P  but just go and read this very funny recap if you're a Lost fan. My favorite part was this scene, and everytime Benry got a punch in the face - it didn't matter if it was Jack's fist or Danielle's elbow, as long as Benry is bleeding, I'm happy!

And then Sayid was just like I AM TIED UP AND GAGGED BUT LOLZ OKAY I'M JUST GONNA BREAK THIS GUY'S NECK WITH MY FRAKKING FEET and we were all like OMFG AND SAYID PROVED FOREVER THAT HE COULD EAT PIECES OF SHIT LIKE CHUCK NORRIS AND JACK BAUER FOR BREAKFAST. And then we were like ew he eats shit for breakfast?

Grey's Anatomy - vwida  hated the season finale but I loved it. Bailey starting to doubt herself, George failing the program, the new Dr. Grey, Christina breaking up with that doctor with a pwet on his baba (his wedding vows made me swoon though, and yes I know his name is Preston Burke, Edward and I just think "pwet on baba" is a more interesting name). The low point of the entire series for me remains the title character, who is just Kris Aquino wearing a doctor's coat. Whiny, thinks the universe owes her something because of her "difficult life", over-emotional, always makes everything about her. Joey Potter and Marissa Cooper and Meredith Grey, they're all cut from the same mold.

Gilmore Girls - I will be forever grateful for the parenting lessons this series has given me. Emily Gilmore taught me to never push your daughter away by planning her future for her. Lorelai Gilmore taught me not to praise your daughter too much and tell her she's the smartest kid in the world and that she can do anything, because once she gets criticized by somebody she idolizes or experiences a setback in school or in her career, her world will come crashing down on her. I loved that Rory turned down Logan's offer of marriage, and that the final scene echoed the one in the first season with the Girls in the diner and Luke puttering around preparing food (getting a man to fix you dinner every night - talk about girl power! High five Lorelai!).

And I saved the best for last: my VERONICA MARS. Oh Veronica, I will really and truly miss you.

-more to follow later, because I hear Annika waking up from her nap-

Added 31 hours later (because Annika has been demanding 100% of my time since yesterday)

Where was I? Oh yes, Veronica Mars. The last two episodes were great season finales, because they were written to be season finales. Unfortunately CW reportedly pulled the plug on the show because it wasn't getting good enough ratings, so the series ended on a very very bitin note, with Keith losing the sheriff post in disgrace and Veronica having made enemies out of the most powerful men in Neptune. Then again, as she told Nish (sp?) it wouldn't be the first time those things have happened.

Lamb died about halfway through the season, and I really wish his death had come while he was saving an abused child (since it was hinted that his dad beat him up when he was young) but nope, his last scene really didn't do this character justice. I guess they had to kill him off in order to set up Keith's downfall, but more on that later. Two other minor but well-loved characters were Cliff and Vinnie. Walang tatalo sa dalawang iyun sa kakulitan!

Weevil and Wallace were as loyal to Veronica as ever. My favorite scenes with those two were these memorable conversations they had with Veronica - Wallace's "it was all worth it" and Weevil's "is it love or good old-fashioned lust?", both in season two. I love them both to death. Another loyal ally of Veronica, Mac, had a love problem that wasn't resolved at all. Basta, super nakakabitin ang finale. Can't we get just one more season, kahit half a season lang? I would also love to see how Dick finally copes with his guilt over how he treated his little brother.

Logan is still my favorite character on this show, but like all the other characters he wasn't given enough to do in season 3. He moped over Veronica for the better part of the season, then got together with Parker. And I thought Hannah was bad! Hannah at least had a sense of humor, and baked Logan that cute "get out of jail free" cake. Parker on the other hand turned him into the kind of guy that would put his and his girlfriend's faces on a cake, yuuuck. But his true colors came shining through (very violently, I might add) when he feels called upon to defend Veronica's honor. Move over, Romeo and Juliet... there never was a more epic LoVe story than Logan Echolls and Veronica Mars.

Finally, Keith. As much as I love Logan, the Veronica-Keith dynamic is the heart of this show and it never fails to move me whenever Keith proves how much he loves his daughter. The most touching father-daughter scenes on TV: in season one, Veronica signing away any claim she had to the Kane fortune before Keith tells her he truly is her father; in season two, Keith telling Veronica he doesn't know if he can ever trust her again, and in season three, Keith cooking dinner for Veronica after destroying the video that would probably land her in jail. If only every father were like Keith, the world would be a happier place.

My weeks will not be the same now that I won't have the next episode of Veronica Mars to look forward to. I'll have to settle for the DVDs, good thing I put off buying seasons 1 and 2 because I really want a box set that includes all the seasons. And I really can't blame CW because ratings are a TV network's bread and butter, right? And without them we wouldn't even have had a season 3.

There are some other shows that I hear are good, and some I tried watching but didn't like for various reasons. Like The Office - the first episode was too much like the British version and I found the British characters more believable, probably because when I see Steve Carrell I see a 40-year-old virgin and not an office manager, and I've never caught an episode since. Maybe I should? And Friday Night Lights, which I actually watched 4 episodes of but sorry
cymer , hindi ko lang siguro trip ang pagka-drama ng show na ito hehe, I guess I prefer shows that make fun of themselves once in a while. I also tried watching Supernatural pero duwag ako e. I'd like to watch Brothers and Sisters though, and How I Met Your Mother. Those seems like safe choices, no intense locker room speeches that make me want to yell "what's the big deal, it's just a game!!!" or demons pinning mothers to the ceiling with their blood dripping down on their baby in the crib. Yikes, even just thinking about that scene freaks me out.
