The best day ever - 04/17/2007

Annika's been having a hard time adjusting to daycare. Maybe because she was sick and missed the last week of inskolning (literally "schooling in")? The past two weeks, she would only eat half a cup of yoghurt the whole 7 hours she's there, and only plays by herself or sits in the stroller holding a toy. We were reassured that it's normal and as long as she eats well when she's at home, she won't starve. Still, we were worried. I was contemplating only sending her there 4 hours a day (my original plan that didn't turn out to be possible because they say it's better if she gets used to the whole daily routine) or even taking her out of daycare and getting a babysitter even if it would eat up most of my salary.

Yesterday was very different though, Edward brought her there and she cried as usual when the daycare fröken took her. But when Edward left the room, the crying stopped! When he went back at 4pm to fetch her Lisbeth (Annika's favorite) happily reported that Bochie ate that day and fed herself, danced and played with the other children YAY! It was, in her words, Annika's best day ever!!! at daycare. She didn't go today because she stays home on Wednesdays (we want her to have a little break in the middle of the week so that she can rest). I hope tomorrow will be even better than Tuesday!

At 6:30 pm it was Edward's turn. His new PC was finally delivered and he immediately set it up. He's recited the specs to me ten thousand times and the video card is apparently terrific but being clueless about hardware I haven't retained any of the information that he probably has very vivid dreams about :P The monitor is HUGE, almost as big as our TV, and since my laptop sits behind it, when I'm working I feel like the back of the HUGE monitor is going to swallow me up.

Oh, you think I'm exaggerating?

Just in case it still isn't clear how HUGE the monitor is, here's a picture of Bochie using the stand (the brace holding up the monitor in the two pictures above) as a podium:

And nope, we didn't win the lottery... we were only able to afford this because of this great benefit called förmånsdator where Swedish companies lease home PCs to their employees. Edward says this program started in the '90s as a way to encourage people to get home computers and learn more about PCs. Maybe this is one of the reasons why Sweden is the 2nd most technologically innovative country in the world according to this article? This machine and the monitor will only cost us about 2/3 of the market value. How it works is that we pay rent for the equipment for three years, interest-free of course, and then at the end of the 3-year period we can pay a small fee to keep it or exchange it and lease an even better machine. The great thing about the Hem PC is that since it's not a work computer we Edward can use it for his games, which is what he's doing right now -- and he keeps calling me to come around to his side of the table to point out something that I really can't appreciate because I'm nowhere near as geeky interested in gaming as he is.

Anyways, Annika may have another "best day ever" at daycare soon, but I have a feeling that for Edward, nothing will top this day.
