In the name of gender equality

So the almost-universal sign for a pedestrian crossing is a man walking on stripes right? Them Swedish feminists have protested this saying that females should be represented too - di lang naman lalaki ang mga tumatawid sa kalye di ba? So the Swedish equivalent of DPWH was persuaded to create... Fru Gårman*. The newspapers say we should see her on ( Read more... )

Magkano kaya ginastos para lang sa design, at gagastusin para sa pagpapagawa at install ng mga signs? Ayaw ko nang isipin.

Funny though, that the woman is thin, in a skirt, with girly hair, definitely young... talk about women's stereotypes when the aim is supposedly feminist. I never really thought about the pedestrian man as being "anti-woman" (in fact, I like it that in some pedestrian crossings, it shows a man holding a girl, representing fathers with kids), but I wonder if the stereotypical silhouettes of the pedestrian man and woman will actually reinforce, not criticize, traditional understandings of gender?

It's ironic no? It doesn't accomplish anything, it will cost money, and in short it's a silly idea. (I don't think that came through in this post, di ako magaling magsulat sarcastically)

The pedestrian sign is just to show you where to cross but people had to take it one step further.

DN published a letter from an Ettan class suggesting that they put up "Familjen Gårman" signs instead to make it clear that anyone can cross. Baka daw kasi akala ng mga bata na flickor lang ang pwede tumawid kung may Fru Gårman na signs, at pojkar lang ang pwede sa Herr Gårman. Kids sometimes often have more sense than adults do :D

i can be a feminist myself, but these days i noticed these groups tend to overreact, no offense meant. streamers, protests, arguments slightly overdone at times.
