I still haven't posted much about living in Nashville. Maybe it's because I'm lazy. Maybe it's because I'm not sure people will care. But, some people have asked so I 'll post some random thoughts.
First off, the job search is picking up. I did some suggested work on my resume and it seems to help. I have gotten more calls in the last week about specific jobs (and not just recruiters looking to add me to the stable) than I have since I started looking. But this post isn't about jobs - this is about random thoughts about the area.
- I have more than ample opportunity to use my Thurston Howell III voice "I don't mind it when it's hot, but I hate it when it's stuffy." Even still, the weather is gorgeous.
- The area where we live is kinda like Rochester, so the culture shock is minimal. Every store we love is nearby, but there's still lots of greenery and ... "rural-ness" about. Also Chick-Fil-A is goddamn awesome. There are a lot of northern transplants, so I often forget I'm in "the south."
- Speaking of, a "Yankee" is a visiting northerner. A "damn Yankee" is one who stays. Just FYI.
- The mosquitoes down here are small pathetic looking things, but they are ninjas and fast as fuck and before you know it your leg looks like you have chickenpox.
- I have to "weed whip a crick" every couple weeks.
- The roads down here are built for biking. Lots of curves, not many stop lights, light traffic. Fewer bikers down here it seems, though. 'Tis a shame. Need to import some. Also I have biking mecca practically in my backyard. Two words - Nachez Trace. More on this in a future post.
- The other morning there were 16 - yes, 16 wild turkeys hanging out in the back yard.
- Speaking of birds, one of the first things I did was put up feeders, and now we get eleventy-billion birds hanging out in back including a ton of hummingbirds. I've never seen so many cardinals in one place. They're like robins around here. Also, I love mockingbirds and there's a lot of them around, although they're not feeder birds or anything.
- I saw a dead armadillo by the side of the road the other day while riding. Surprised the fuck out of me. Other than that, roadkill is a lot less common around here. Maybe it just gets eaten faster? I don't know.
- I think the process whereby you turn into your dad kicks in at 40. Or maybe it's the close proximity to him that helps. Maybe it's a little boredom. In any case, I can (and have) fix just about damn near anything around the house. I find myself wanting to build shit like bathouses. My sister is starting to call me "mini Pa."
- I walked three miles underground yesterday with no more light than some kerosene lanterns. Mammoth Cave is awesome.
- Having a garage is fucking awesome.
In short, I love it down here.
