He discovered the use for his belly button--which is a reminder of our connection to others. It's been a while but I think the Doctor learned "delight" from Barbara. He loved Susan, but she was a Time Lord and I think discovery for Susan was merely verification of things she already knew. But for Barbara discovery was everything, and she brought with her a myriad of emotions the Doctor might have thought superfluous, but began to understand that rather than trivial, delight expands one’s experience.

I hate the "she humanised him" line but it does quite work for Barbara. She argues back and he grows to respect her and not just look down on all humans as annoying. Before he knows them he thinks it's fiiiiine to kidnap random humans to keep his family together, so I wonder if their influence helped prepare him for leaving Susan on Earth?
