How do you feel about the marriage of Mickey and Martha, as canonized in The End of Time? I thought they looked perfectly adorable and loving--and hot, very hot. I don't know if it was necessary to have Martha armed and in Fan-fiction I always write that she armed herself after she discovered UNIT had sent Mickey after the Sontaran with backup, but maybe Davies wanted to establish that both characters had made a clean break with the Doctor, Torchwood, UNIT and were making it up as they go. But other than that-- I liked the scene far more than I believed I would have when I heard the rumors, principally because Mickey and Martha were in the field working together as opposed to a domestic, passive scene. I wanted more of their joint adventures.
Why do you think Russell T. Davies decided that their characters should get together, and what are some reasons that Mickey and Martha would fall in love that have nothing to do with past relationships with the Doctor and Rose? Davies said something about wanting to keep the Smith and Jones angle, and at the time he had planned for Freema at least to move on to TORCHWOOD, but both actors received better offers. Also Davies knows that Freema and Noel were friends before Doctor Who, so for all we know one of both of them might have suggested after Tom Ellis became unavailable. I certainly prefer Mickey and Martha in the field to Martha talking to some tall guy in a hospital or faux African clinic shot.
As to why they would fall in love: 1) Mickey and Martha are both very attractive people, intelligent and the only people of color in the group, so I imagine there was instant physical attraction and curiosity. 2.)They had just saved the world together. 3.) Jack played cupid. 4.) Have to think Martha took Mickey and Jack home so he might have been drawn to her family, as he had lost hers. 5.) Mickey isn't needy, so that would have been switch for Martha. 6) Mutual appreciation and admiration.
Martha's apparent breakup with her fiancé Tom is never addressed in canon: do you have any thoughts on what you think happened in that relationship? The last we hear of Tom is in the Big Bang radio show; Jack asks Martha if she is ready to leave that fiancée of hers --and she doesn't answer. She tries to get Jack to talk about Tosh and Owen's death, and it appears that she attended the funerals for the Torchwood personnel. She is working and living in the USA. Although Tom is off in Africa, he works for NHS, so the UK is his home base and Martha isn't there. Maybe the secrecy got to Tom.
