Fix-its are AU, just a special type. I kind of feel the same way about denial fics, but really there are levels of denial and all of fan fiction is AU until one of us get hired by the BBC to write Who.
Wanting Ten to behave more chivalrously with Martha is denial--he didn't, and Tennant said very clearly that he was written as insensitive and Un-forgiving with Martha and that is the way he approached the character and the scenario.
Making Ten more aware, and more sensitive, and Martha less enabling is kind of a slap in the face of the marvelous job David and Freema did with how their characters were written-and in time I came to accept that.
On the other hand, in season Three some situations -1913/1599- were due to writer’s lack of research or unwillingness to test the boundaries of stereotypical visions, this generation of writers strangely chicken -s&*% approach to certain human conditions.
I'm not fond of OTP pairings, but imagine all the Martha/Tom, (I wrote a few) River/Rory fictions that were suddenly OTP because of canon. :-O
Most times, even when I put Martha with Two, Eight, Four, or Nine, I made certain the Doctor and Martha "Forgot" and Ten was back with Rose, because Ten belonged with Rose, and it is what made Ten the person he was.
