the Doctor's Companion is dangerous because the Doctor destroys lives.
I never thought this about the classic Doctor. Manipulative, yes he was. Dependent on his relationships with his companions or vice versa----never happened, even with those companions he loved like Ian and Barbara, Jamie, Zoe, Sarah Jane, Ace, Romana and Jo.... It was very clear that the Companions worked with the Doctor because that is where they wanted to be, and what they wanted to do. The Doctor truly broadened their horizons.
Although, I think the Doctor of Nu Who is a great deal more self-involved than the classic models, and sometimes very unaware of the full results of his actions. I don’t think he destroys lives.

Which do you prefer and why I don’t think the departures in terms of which kind is the better option? OKay, Peri was scalped and just dissapeared--that was poor writing, but consider the writing of that entire season.

When I think of tragic only two names come to mind: Adric and Donna. Adric died too young but heroically. Donna’s journey and mind was cruelly torn from her. I didn’t “like” what happened to them, but both scenarios were well acted and well written. What any long running series has to be careful of is the departure of a companion or loved one becoming a running joke-or having the departed loved one turn up more than once.

Conversely, are there any good endings for Companions that strike you as too optimistic? For the most part we are dealing with adults perfectly capable or pursuing lives without the Doctor with equal passion that they did life with the Doctor. People go back to their own lives, especially with people Jo, Lis, Jamie, Sarah Jane, Martha, Amy and Rory.

And are there any Companions whose fates weren't specified (or at least weren't described in much detail) that you'd like to see onscreen? Not for that reason. I want to see some companions, more than others, have continued, Doctor free adventures, because I enjoyed watching them. I’d like to see the Adventures of Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Jones, Professor Lake and Rosita, and more with Madame Vastra and Jennie, Ace, Jo and her grandchildren, or Jamie tangling with some legendary beast in old Scotland.
