Last night we watched the second serial of the First Doctor and it was the first appearance of the Daleks! They didn't have a "EXTERMINATE" policy when the Doctor first landed on Skarro for anything non-Dalek, so I'm interested to watch them evolve from where we met them to the Daleks we know today.
The episodes included in the serial were:
"The Dead Planet"
"The Survivors"
"The Escape"
"The Ambush"
"The Expedition"
"The Ordeal"
"The Rescue"
These first two serials I thought could be a little dragged out. At first they land on a planet they don't know (turns out to be Skarro) and they believe everything on the planet is dead. The forest is petrified and the Doctor spots a city that he wants to explore. Ian and Barbara are against exploring the city so the Doctor pretends a piece of the TARDIS is missing so he can get into the city. (When he coughs up to what he did, Ian is not impressed with the Doctor. As a viewer, I'm like OH YOU) While in the forest, someone brushes Susan, but the Doctor and Ian think she's making things up. When they get to the city, it appears empty.
Barbara gets lost in the city and Daleks capture her. The Daleks also manage to capture Ian, Susan and the Doctor. Ian tries to run but the Daleks stun him, temporarily paralyzing him. I thought they were going to kill him but the Daleks are curious as to who these people are. The entire party starts feeling the effects of radiation poisoning which the instruments in the TARDIS warned them about before they left, but they didn't look at. The Doctor is in the worst shape. The Daleks allow one party member to return to the TARDIS to get drugs left behind by the stranger who brushed against Susan. Ian wants to go but his legs are too weak so eventually Susan goes.
She meets the Thal people, ancient enemies of the Daleks. It turns out the Daleks dropped a nuclear bomb on them hundreds of years ago and most of them died. Those that survived did so with radiation drugs they share with Susan. The Daleks want to copy these drugs but then realize they need the radiation to survive.
Susan returns with the drugs and heals the Doctor, Ian and Barbara. The Doctor determines the Daleks move with static electricity and they are able to capture one, take it out of the casing and Ian goes inside so they can escape the city. You don't see what the actual creature looks like.
The Daleks trick the Thal into entering the city with the promise of food and peace and then try and kill all of them. That's the Daleks I know! The Daleks are going to poison the atmosphere with more radiation to kill all of the Thal, because Daleks.
The Doctor and his companions escape but realize they have to go back because the Daleks took the fluid link to the TARDIS. They convince the Thal, who are pacifists, that fighting the Daleks is super important (SO not like the new Doctors to do, haha) and at the end, many Thal are killed and we believe all of the Daleks are dead. After leaving Skaro, they are knocked out and DUN DUN DUN... to be continued next week.
Questions I had, please don't answer if it comes up later
-Why don't the Daleks just EXTERMINATE?
-What happens to Thal?
-Susan tells Barbara and Ian that the Doctor knows how to work the TARDIS but he's just old and has forgotten how. How long has Susan been travelling with her grandfather?
What did you love about the serial? What did you hate? I love hearing your thoughts!
