Oh, this is sad:
visual effects house The Mill is closing down their TV department. This will mean the loss of 25 jobs and the departure of managing director Will Cohen. The company "had weathered losses in 2012 and those losses had accelerated in the first quarter of 2013", what with, amongst other things, no more Merlin and "the BBC not commissioning a Doctor Who series this year".
The Mill has done the visual effects for Doctor Who and its spin-offs ever since the show came back. Will Cohen and his team of artists would go above and beyond the call of duty because of their love for the show, producing stunning visuals unlike anything in the rest of television. I hope they find good jobs deserving of such talent.
I don't know who will be doing the VFX for the 50th anniversary onwards.
This comes on the heels of the news of the
BAFTA Craft nominations for The Mill for Visual Effects and Graphic Design and Murray Gold for Original Television Music in Asylum of the Daleks, and that Doctor Who
has won a Peabody Award "for evolving with technology and the times like nothing else in the known television universe".
