Well our Summer Institute is over and the attendees loved the Doctor Who poster. But that was only the beginning. Jürgen and I are planning on expanding analysis to include much more. But I need some help from you to assist us in determining what you think is important and what might be a waste of time.
First off let me tell you Jürgen is a post-doc in the department and has written many papers on network analysis. He is quite versed in the subject. He found the idea of a Doctor Who intriguing and that's where the project took off.
Things we're considering including in the analysis:
1. The ages of the companions and how they changed over the years. This will be separated by gender.
2. Thinking about exactly which non-companions to include. Some I feel are important to include in the larger dataset with the companions. [i.e. Sgt. Benton]
3. I also have information on all the characters [where it is available] of their planet of origin, race, and gender. I've started an attribute for the companions which rates them in "screaming"
4. Want to to an analysis of the production crew and the connections to various episodes and doctors. These also are gender tagged and I'm thinking of seeing how the percentage of male/female production personnel might have influenced the Doctor. This includes Writer, Director, Producer, Script Editor, and a few other crew that sounded important.
5. Of course there should be a full analysis of the uses of the sonic screwdriver. First I collected every list I could find. It was incomplete and none of them matched so I did the next best thing. I scrubbed through every episodes looking all the uses. Let me tell you, that took a while. The information I have separated so far is the number of successes and failures by each person [Doctor and other people] separated into 54 categories and listed in which episode it was used.
6. I am building a timeline based on the information gotten from the Wikipedia page. Am not sure what the final format will be. Maybe Jürgen might have a few thoughts on that.
So if anyone out there has any input on the subject we'd enjoy hearing from you. The more input we get the better the final modeling will be.
And Jürgen has said that he would like to produce an actual paper on the subject because, well he couldn't find one and figured that it was something that needed done. And since he has the credentials to get it published I figured that a good enough reason to run with it...
Thanks...
